CHRISTCHURCH RACES.
The Canterbury Autumn meeting came off on Monday and Tuesday last. The weather on the first day being so unpropitious for an out-door gathering, of course interfered seriously with the attendance of the public; On Tuesday the weather was delicious and sufficiently enticing to send out big crowds of holiday-makers. The following is a summary of the events decided:— First Day. Fbee Handicap, of 50 so vs., added to a sweepstake of 5 soys, for acceptors; three-quarters of a mile. Mr J. W. Time—2 mm 43| sec. Champagne Stakes, of 150 soys, for two-year-olds, added to.a sweepstake of 15 soys each. Colts, Bst 101b ; fillies, Bst 81b. Twenty-six subs. Six furlongs. Mr E. G. Griffiths'.brc by Traducer— Idalia, Bst 101b (Nolan) 1 Mr John Lunn's b c Volunteer, by Totara—Skybird, Bst 101b (B. Bay) 2 Mr D. O'Brien's bf Fenella, by the Flying Dutchman —Novice, Bst 81b (Demuth) 3 Marie Antoinette, On Dit, Grip, and Casta Diva also started. Casta Diva turned right round at the start, and ran the other way. The others finished in the order named. Time—l mm 21 sec. The Epsom Stakes, of 100 soys, for three-year-olds and upwards, added to a sweepstakes of 10 soys each. Winners since August 1, 1878, of a weight for age race of 100 soys, 51b extra ; 200 soys, 71b ; 300 soys, 101b. Mr W. F. Neilson's b g Fishhook, by Traducer — Laurel, aged, 9st 21b (Stewart) 1 Mr J. W. Mallock's b c Nemo, 3 yrs, Bst 101b (E. Power) 2 Betting—Even on Fishhook. Both ran together till near the half-mile post, when Nemo bolted, leaving Fishhook to win easily. Hack Bace, 10 soys ; catch weights ; post entry, 1 soy. Once round. Won by Strike-a-Light, beating six others.
Second Day.
Flying Stakes,' 100 sove, for two-year-olds and upwards, added to a sweepstake of 5 soys each. Weight for age, Three-quarters of a mile. Mr W. F. Handicap Steeplechase, of 100 soys, added to a sweepstake of 10 soys each. About 3f miles, over such country as the stewards may direct. Mr P. Butler's eh g The Agent, syrs, 12st 71b (W. Hankins) 1 Mr C. Goodman's b g Ivanhoe, aged, lOat 121b (Owner) 2 Mr W. F. Neilson's eh g Te Whetu, aged, 12st 31b (J. O'Neil) ... 3 Mr H. Lunn's gr g Fakir, aged, lOst 71b (S. Osborne) 4 This race is described as being one of the best cross country events ever seen on the course. All the horses kept well together, and not one met with a mishap. Easter Handicap, of 100 soys, for three-year-olds and upwards, added to a sweepstake of 7 soys each. Second horse to save his stake. One mile. | Mr G. Time, 1 mm 47£ sees. Selling Eace of 50 soys, added to a sweepstake of 5 soys each. Weight for age. Winner to be sold by auction imine. diately after the race for 400 soys ; any surplus to go to the fund. If entered to be sold for 300 soys, allowed 71b ; for 200 sore. 141b ; for 100 soys, 211b; for 50 soys, 281b. Three-quarters of a mile. Mr E. Vallance's b g Camballo, to be sold for £300,4yr5, Bst 71b (Nolan) 1 Mr J. H. Lunn's b gßobin Hood, aged, - 50 soys, 7st lib (T. Clark) ... 2 W C. Webb's b m Undine. 4 yrs, 100 soys, 7st 51b (W. M-Conkey) ... 3 Eight other horses ran, and all the horsea were together till close into the rail*, when Camballo came to the front and wdn by a length, Bobin Hood and Undine pressing
him hard, and racing, neck and neck for second place. Time, Imm 22$ sees. The Consolation Stakes, which was won by Chancellor, brought a very pleasant meeting to a close.-
