ALLEGED MURDER NEAR INVERCARGILL.

Invercabgill, April 16. Iv the Police Court this morning, a man named Timothy Whelan was charged with the murder of his mate, Thomas Lynch. Both parties were engaged, on the railway works between here and Riverton. Inspector Fox stated that the facts, so far as known, were that Whelan and deceased were working on the River ton Hug of railway, and lived in tents close to it. Yesterday e>ening a quarrel arose between them about a clay pipe, which deceased accused the prisoner with having taken. He denied having done so, and offered his clothes to be searched. This was dqne, but no pipe found. Some angry language passed between the two, which was followed by a fierce struggle. A Mrs Carrol, living near by, hearing a nois§,

looked in, and, on seeing what was going on, called on her husband to separate the men. He came" and did so, and immediately Lynch dropped his head to one side, fell down, and, on being lifted up, he was found to be dead. A remand was granted to allow of the enquiry .taking place before a Coroner's jury. It is understood the inquest willbe held to-morrow. v
