LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting was held at the office in Kaituna, on Monday, the 3rd inst, all the members being present. A general report was submitted for the consideration of the Board, as follows:—

" That Berryman's contract, for forming about 49 chains in Dunford's Valley, was : completed, also some necessary work at the mouth of the main drain; that T. Macartney had completed carting abont one-third of his 2000 yards metal contract; that J. Bedford's metalling contract is proceeding. slowly, and not likely to be finished in' time to open the road for the winter season ; that A. Harkers intended to finish his contract for broken metal in a fortnight from date; that N. Walters had completed erection of bridge at Little River, and that J. Archer had been engaged to cart metal and make up approaches to same; thatKeynolds and Co. had finished their contract of clearing 34 chains in continuation of Cemetery road ; and that M. Keenan and Co. had completed about one mile of their contract in Western Valley ; also that T. Bavins had been engaged to cart stuff for binding some blue metal on the main road across the Lake flats ; it was also reported that the contractors for forming bridle track from Wainui saddle to foot of Lake Forsyth " had , commenced at Bell and Ensor's boundary, instead of the upper end, with a. view to-having the use of the road for getting up provisions." It was intimated that it would be necessary to take steps to remove the eld bridge at Little Eiver, it causing considerable obstruction to the free water-way. The Board decided to communicate with Mr W. White, relative to the tramway, before any action be taken in the matter.

Mr J. F. Stanbury, through the Clerk, desired to know what his position was with the Board in relation to the Pound at Little River.

Mr Stanbury to be informed that the Found is still under the control of the Board.

Mr Price applied to the Board to open up the drains on the side of the road passing tirough the swamp. His application was acceded to. It was decided also to put in a large culvert or bridge in the main road through the swamp, in addition to those already in with the object of checking the overflow in time of flood.

A letter having been received from Barnett Bros., consenting to some work to be done to the main drain at Tai Tapu,

It was resolved that the parties interested in the drain be applied to with the intention of ascertaining what their views are with reference to widening , and deepening the drain, and if they are inclined to contribute towards the cost of the proposed work, and that a report upon the matter be submitted for the consideration of the Board on the 17th hist.^> ■*.'' :

Mr Bedford tie informed that, if satisfactory progress in his contract has not beon made by the Ist of April, the Board will emploj' labor at contractor's risk.

A letter was received from Messrs Aschman, Jones, Joblin, and others, condemning the plan of cutting away the banks of the i creek in Western valley for the purpose of making fords as per specification in i Keenau's contract. The writers apprehended disastrous consequences from the work, but as they did not suggest any alternative plan, the Board concluded that, as fords had been decided upon and partially completed, sufficient time be given to test the utility or otherwise of the work before any permanent work be decided upon. It beipg, desirable to make some improveWtent in the main line of road at Tai Tapu reducing the angles made in the original survey, it was resolved that Mr Forbes be deputed to wait upon some of the owners of land adjoining the road in order to ascertain what might be the probable cost of any land required for the above purpose. • The Board having decided to build a new bridge over the Halswell river near the Tai Tapu school, the Clerk was directed

tc inform the Lincoln Road Board of such intention, and desire to be informed if the Lincoln Board are inclined to contribute half cost.

A survey party having commenced the long-expected work in the Little River bush, it was resolved to urge upon the Chief Surveyor, to enable the Board through the assistance of the party to get a elarting point, so as to open up the various roads in the valley.

Tonders were ordered to be invited for certain works.

Sundry payments, were ibade, and the Board adjourned.
