ONE THING AND ANOTHER.
(Collated from our Exchanges.)
Mr Henry Broadburst addressed a trades union meeting at Hanley recently. He denied that trades unionism was: responsible for the depression of trade, and eaid organisation among the ; working classes had worked wonderful changes for the better in their condition. Trades unionism had done a great work in educating workmen, and one of its first principles was to enforce the duty of helping one another. Mr Broadhurst quoted Mr Robert Giffen's statement that the capital' of the country had increased between 1865 and 1875 by £2,400,000,000, enough to pay the national debt about three times over. . Working men were therefore more than justified in asking for an increased share in the wealth of the country. He asked capitalists to carefully think over this question, and keep the working class satisfied, instead of driving them to extremities. He urged the working men of the country- to give more attention to political questions, and to take opportunities of emphatically condemning the policy of the alien who was now at the head of the Government.
