AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Wednesday, Feb. 19.

The usual fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on the above date at their office, Balguerie street.

Present—His Worship the Mayor, Cra Beecher, Billens, Bruce, Cullen, Henning, and Penlington. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. COBRESPONDENCE. Letters were read— From Mr C. F. Barker, stating that Mr Saunders had signed the agreement for leasing the Ashburton Reserves, and ask ing instructions as to drawing lease. Resolved—That Mr Barker be instructed to have the lease drawn by the solicitor who had prepared the agreement. From the Colonial Secretary's office (circular), stating that extension of time for preparation of valuation roll could not be granted unless the delay was caused by "misadventure or accident."

From the Akaroa and Wainiii Road Board, appointing time and place for meeting a deputation of the Council re settlement of accounts, s The matter had alread^ , been attended to by the Mayor. From Mr W. Kenny, applying for leave to remove the stable from Reserve 83 to Balguerie street, and promising to complete the work in two hours.

Leave granted on the usual conditions,

Tracings of iron balustrades for bridges, with prices, were considered. One from Mr J. Anderson was approved, at a cost of £16 10s per 22 feet. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported the overdraft to be £291. PAYMENTS. An account for 8s for labor was passed for payment. SANITARY. On the motion of Cr Meech, it was resolved that all sanitary questions and drainage be taken into consideration at i the next meeting. <

FOOTPATHS.

Cr Cullen proposed that specifications be prepared for footpaths from Farr's Bridge to Lnrdrter's corner. The general .opinion appeared to be that, though the work* was a necessary one, the state of.,the funds would not allow of its at present, and the motion did not meet with a seconder. , DEFAULTING RATEPAYERS. Cγ Homing, again brought forward his motion about'defaulting ratepayers, viz., that all defaulters for 1877-8 be summonsed at once, and of those for 1878-9 every tenth be proceeded against until all were liquidated. s The motion was carried, Cγ Cullen dissenting. On the motion of Cr Meech, seconded by Cr Billens, it was resolved that the carrying out the foregoing resolution be left in the hands of the Finance,Comj mittee.
