AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

Saturday, Feb. 15,

The usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held on the above date, at their offices, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present—Messrs Williams (Chairman), Curry, Shadbolt, Duxbury, and M'Donald.

FRENCH FARM VALLEY ROAD.

Messrs S. Hunt and W. Wright waited on the Board in reference to the route proposed for this road. After considerable, conversation, a route was settled which seemed to meet the views of the deputation. The Chairman said the road should bo made, but it was impossible to fix the exact date.

FENCE ON LONG BAY ROAD. Mr J. Curry attended to make an offer respecting this fence, which the Board had for sal^^^ter,, He his offer in writing. '■;■ -■ * .v-rsfe*-"""'^ ,■■-,. i jMItfUTES. ! ' -'The minutes bfVthej, previous meeting were read and Qonfiraied. "„> \ kplsA HORSRSHOE BEND. I JThe Engineer specifor certain required "nt that'locality. = Mr T. S. Jolinson also wrote, withdrawing his former offer oh account of there .being more work in the matter than he at •first supposed." He Qowjasked £20 for the land, and named a price for the work. Mr Duxbury thought the price asked was excessive. It was over £180 an acre. He moved that Mr Johnson be offered at j the rate % of £100 an acre for the land. I The work should not be mixed up with I the land. •It was a bad precedent. They should call for tenders for the work.

The resolution was carried. GERMAN BAY OLD BOAD. Mr J. Sunckell wrote, asking that the road to liia place be rSrgraded. , -* The Clerk was ordered to visit and. report. MORA'S ROAD. The contractors for this road wrote, asking for an extension df time to the extent of two weeks. Extension granted. .-. . HORSESHOE BEND. Messrs Everall and Gunning wrote, applying for the balance of their contract. The Engineer's report on the work was read, in which he stated that the contractors had left without- making any report *to him that they wanted a final inspection. He considered that £20 would be barely sufficient to make good the deficiencies they had left. At the same time he recommended their case to the favorable consideration of the Board on account of the injury they had been l subjected to by the outrage lately committed on them, :

Considerable discussion took place on the question, Messrs Duxbury and Curry thing that the Board should take cognizance of losses such as these sustained by contractors; while Mr Shadbolt and the Chairman considered tnat if they wanted to compensate them in such cases they ought to put their hands in their pockets. Ultimately it was agreed to pay the balance due without deduction, on the ground of their having done work considerably over and above what «vas anticipated. ENCBOACHMENT. Mr Peter David wrote, complaining that the Board were encroaching on his land by a road they were making called Chatfield's road. . The Clerk explained that he had seen Mr David, and he believed that the Board were not trespassing. The matter was left in the hands of the Clerk. i' ■, ;•. • MISCELLANEOUS. The Engineer wrote, suggesting that a wider deeper water-course should be constructed where the stream has been diverted.

It was agreed to authorize Mr Fenton to make the necessary arrangements with thp contractors. ! "- ; \:

He also pointed out the absolnte necessity of providing additional supervision for the works in progress. " . \ The Board agreed in the necessity of employing eomeone for this purpose. After consideration, it was agreed that the appointment of someone should be left in abeyance for a fortnight. COMPENSATION CLAIMS. Mr Ollivier wrote to say that he should shortly be in Akaroa for the purpose of settling these claims as previously adjudicated on. WAIKERAKIKARI ROAD. The engineer's report on the progress of this road was read, stating that the work was being proceeded with satisfactorily.

WAINUI BOA'd DIVERSION.

Mr Wilkiris attended to explain with regard to the resolution of the Board which had been communicated to the engineers. : ■ ■' ; < ; Messrs Fenton and Wilkins declined to make tho survey of the old road, Rhodes' Flat, accordance with the terms proposed in the Board's letter, viz., that* unless the work passed the Chief Surveyor and received hie verification, it was not to be charged for. Mr Wilkins stated that the surveys in Wainui were complicated and incorrect, and that the Government maps did not not agree in nine out of ten cases with the pegs and fences on the ground. The Chier! Surveyor' had expressed an opinion that he could not pass surveys of roads to be closed under the Public' Works Act unless they agreed with the Crown grants. Ifcwaa ithpossibie to make them agree unless .the present fences and pegs were ignored,. which of course would be out of the question, as. the proprietors of the sections naturally< look upon these pegs and' fences as defining the boundaries of their land. The Board requested Messrs Fenton > and Wilkins to embody their reply in a letter. OBSTRUCTION ON ROAD AT EOBINSON'S BAY.

It was'reported to the Board that the fence erecred across this road, and which the Board had ordered to be removed had been re^erected.

The Board resolved to insert a notice in the local paper, declaring the road open, and that any person obstructing it would

be prosecuted. The Clerk was also instructed to have the obstructing fence destroyed.
