MR HENRY VARLEY.
To ike Editor of the Akaroa Mail.
■ Sir", —Having noticed two extracts in your columns speaking disparagingly-of the character of Mr Varley,.the evangelist, perhaps you will now insert an extract from an Ariiericari" paper "in" reference to that gentleman's late visit to America. One American paper said he had gained more ears, and perhaps more hearts, than any Christian preacher that had ever visited their shores, and the Rev. Br
*. Lorrimer, of the Levite of the Temple, pubin Boston, U. S., speaking of Mr ' Varley's visit to that city, said: —" In my judgment, the most remarkable effects of his brief ministry had been the fresh impulse it had given to the examination of the Bible. Precious to us before his visit.
it seems doubly so now. We heard it * said that during his work in Toronto all the bibles iri the city were bought up. We cannot say as much for Boston ; possibly we keep a larger supply on hand » than our Canadian neighbors, but it will not be denied that many hitherto neglected bibles have been brought into requisition and diligently used. _ It is alee evident that the religious condition of the churches has been strikingly improved." Mr Varley is no sectarian, and no believer in hair-splitting "on points of doc- «. trine or forms of worship. In short, he absolutely rejects the traditions of men, and rests all on faith in God, and holds the Holy Scripturesto.be the one divine record of doctrine to be believed.and duties to-be •* practised. There is no mistake about his feeling what he preaches. The Cross of Christ and the saving power of faith is his constant theme. It pervades the whole man. It animates alike his voice and
heart, bis character and conduct, and gives such a wonderful reality and power :% to his preaching. He is in earnest. He preaches for God and eternity. * WM. BARNETT.
