Melbourne, Jan-. 20. A memorial is being signed for presentation to the Government by the tinemployed in the city, representing that . severe distress exists, and praying the Government to take steps to ameliorate it. A discovery is reported in Gipps Land of new and rich quartz reefs. Jan. 21. After being f&ted by the Melbourne ** " and East Melbourne Clubs, the Canter- "• bury cricketers return to New Zealand to-day. The unemployed are agitating. * The Argus publishes the following particulars of the ultimatum sent to Cetewayo :—" Surrender of the culprits who abducted the Natal women ; a fine of 600 cattle* the disbandmerit of the Zulu army; a~ ; of the offenders; the return of missionaries to the country ; ,and the appointment of resident officials." It is stated that Cetewayo ** has 50,000-men, and his influence extends to the equator. Jan. 22. The Somerset arrived at Cooktown * from Hong Kong with small-pox on board. She has been refused and goes South immediately. The police have renewed their activity j against the Kellys. It is lpieved that some of their abettors who were arrested have turned informants, and definite) results are expected. I Brisbane, Jan. 22. Missionary Macfarlane visited the scene of Mr Ingram's massacre, and m . learned that three whites, three Kanakas, and one Chinaman were killed. The son of Canon Irons, of London, was one of the victims. * Sydney, Jan. 22. News from New "Guinea state that Mr Ingram, the Queensland Government resident on Thursday Island, and the crew of the Uura, have been murdered by the natires. ' The Easby arrived at Newcastle on\ Monday. ;
