AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

Saturday, Jan. 18. The usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held on the above date, at their offices, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present—Messrs Williams (chairman), Curry, Shadbolt, and M'Donald. The minutes of the previous-meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from "J. Aylmer, Esq., offering, on behalf of the Government, £15, for the stable on reserve 83. 'Consideration of the letter was postponed till next meeting to give time for a reply to be received from the Government to the last communication of the Board. OLD DUVAUCHELLE'S BAY ROAD. A [letter was read from the Board's engineer to the Chief Surveyor Christchurch, explaining the reasons which had induced him to survey the above road according to existing fences, instead of Crown grants. The Board considered that the Engineer himself was alone responsible for the letter, and declined to express an opinion thereon. SURVEYS OF BENCHED ROAD... A letter was received from the Chief Surveyor, Christchurch, in reply to one from the Board, on this subject, stating that he had issued a circular to his surveyors to take care to leave ample room for side cuttings or embankments, either by running roads so as to leave the required space, oj- by increasing the width to 150 links, or more, if necessary. He could not undertake, however, to follow each little bend in a benched road and make a turn in the fences, and peg the road on both sides, as such a course would cause a greater loss of the surveyor's time than the Board was aware of. LONG BAY ROAD. Mr Jules Lelievre wrote, asking that the necessary deeds be at once prepared, to enable his claim for compensation to be settled. The Engineer stated that he had furnished the Board's solicitor with the necessary plans and description. The Clerk was instructed to write to the solicitor, requesting him to push forward the preparation of the nocessary deeds. LE BON'S BAY ROAD DIVERSION THROUGH TAKA MATUA. It was resolved to write to Mr Tabart, Mr Inman's attorney, asking him if he had power to cqnvey the above road in accordance with arrangements made with Mr Inman. Also that on receipt of an answer from Mr Tabart, a meeting of ratepayers be called at once. HARMAN'S TRACK.

Mr H. Watkins wrote, calling the attention of the Board to the fact that the late fires at Little River had caused many trees to fall across the above track, rendering it impassable. He asked that it might receive immediate attention. The Clerk was instructed to see Mr Watkins, and ascertain what was required to be done. FRENCH FARM ROAD. The Engineer reported that he had made an inspection of the French Farm Valley for the purpose of selecting the best line of road to suit all parties. He found it almost impossible to lay off a line that would meet the wishes of both Mr Hunt and Mr W. Wright. It was decided that Mr Shadbolt should accompany the engineer and point out the line of road originally agreed upon by the settlers. mackay's road diversion. Mr J. F. Roberts, arbitrator for the Board, wrote, enclosing a copy of a letter to Mr James Hay, containing his award in the abb va case. As it appeared that the time for the above arbitration had expired, it was resolved that Mr Piper be communicated with, asking him whether he would consent to act as arbitrator in the place of Mr Roberts. MOUNT BOSSU ROAD,

Mr M'Donald thought it would be advisable to call for tenders for that portion of the above road running through the Pilot Reserve. This portion would be the most expensive part of the work, and he considered it would be better to let it separately. The Board decided not to proceed with the work at piesent. FUNDS FROM COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Chairman wished the Board to take into consideration the disposition of the funds which they had to receive from the County' Council. The Council expected them to name certain works on which these funds should be expended. He thought the roads connecting the. harbor with Okain's Bay and Little Akaloa, and the Summit road were very necessary works.

Mr M'Donald thought a portion of these funds should be allotted to Wainui riding, to be there expended according to the wish of the ratepayers., He contended that Wainui had not received its fair share of Road Board expenditure. The Chairman thought that such statements should not go forth unchallenged. He considered that the Wainui district had had more than its share of money spent in it.

Considerable discussion ensued, Mr M'Donald maintaining his opinion that Wainui was entitled to a pro rata share of these funds.

Ultimately it was agreed that the funds should be devoted to--1. The Okain's Bay road from Piper's diversion to the snmtnit; 2. The summit from the Little Akaloa road to Pigeon Bay road ; and 3. The Main road from Barry's Bay to Wainui.
