AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD
Saturday, Nov. 7. Tho usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held at the office, Duvauchelle's Bay, on the above date. Present—Messrs Williams, M'Donald, Curry, and Shadbolt. In the absence of the Chairman Mr Williams was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting" were read and confirmed. SUMMIT ROAD. The Engineer promised to have specifications for re-grading this road ready by next ineeting of the Board. Opinions were expressed that it was extremely doubtful whether a good gradient could be obtained within the chain road. MOUNT BOSSU ROAD. Mr Barrett waited on the Board with reference to the fine of road through Rhodes' property, Wainui, of which he was tenant. Mr Barrett was requested to communicate with Mr Latter, Mr Rhodes' agent, and put his claim in writing by next meeting of the Board. . BRIDLE TRACK TO LONG-BAY, ETC. Mr M'Donald presented a petition from some residents on the Purple Peak line of road, urging the necessity of a bridle track being made in this direction.. At present it was stated that they were in the habit of making use of Mr M'Donald's land for a track. The Board promised to consider the matter, and instructed the Engineer to visit the line and report as to the practicability of making a good road which would be of general utility to the neighborhood, with a branch line, if necessary. Subsequently another petition was received on the same subject, signed in part by the same persons. The former decision of the Board on the matter was adhered to. ONUKD ROAD. Mr Keegan waited upon the Board with reference to the fencing on the line of road through his property and Mr Moore's. He offered to construct the fencing required ut £2 2s per chain. At a later period of the meeting the offer was accepted. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read— From the Land Tax Deputy Commissioner, asking for a copy of the Valuation Roll of the Board for the use of the department. The request to be complied with, and the department to be informed that the Board have valued improvements. From the Littlo River Road Board, stating that they had adopted eight feet as the width of the proposed . road from the Wainui saddle to Lake Forsyth, and that a deputation from their Board would meet any members of th_. Akaroa Board on the 28th instant, at the Hill-top, to settle details as to allocation of funds.
The Littlo Kiver Board to bo informed that a deputation would meet them on the date named. Messrs Williams and Shadbolt were aspointed a deputation for the purpose. From Mr J. F. Roberts, calling tho attention of the' Board to the question of Bell's road. Mr Roberts, as agent for Mr Lyons, protested against the road being taken through certain sections purchased by himself and Mr Piper, and considered that Messrs R. Wilkin and Co. could not give a clear title to the. road after having sold ; the land to Mr Lyons. ; Consideration- of the matter was deferred till next meeting. " From the Public Works Department, enclosing letter from Mr J. Martindale, protesting ageinst the closing of the old Duvauchelle's Bay road. It was resolved to hold a special meeting of the Board on the 14th instant, to take the necessary steps to conclude the matter in accordance with a former letter from the Public Works department. From Jußtih Aylmer, Esq., 8.M., informing the Board that, as they had declined the offer of £35 for the. stable on section 83, Akaroa, he was instructed to inform the Board "that the terms as to notice with the late Provincial Government are to be carried out., viz., six months' notice from date of first letter to the Board, 12th Sept., 1878." From the Secretary of the Race Committee, asking permission to charge for sites for booths on the road side during the ensuing face meeting. The Committee to be informed that they could occupy the Bites, but that the Board had no power to authorize their making a chargf.
From Mr-George Odell, asking for some work to be dono on the road leading to bis property. The Engineer was instructed to visit the lobality and report on the work. "" From Mr W. Kenny, apologising for not having yet Bigned his contract for St. John's road. Mr Kenny to be informed that the contract must be signed at once. / engineer's report. This report was read, in the course of which Mr Fenton stated that the Government Surveyor had twice called upon him, urging him to lay off the line of the Waikernkikari road, so that he might survey. He had accordingly put Mr Wilkin on this work at once, taking him off French Farm for a short time. LONG BAY ROAD. The Engineer reported that there were eight culverts on this road which were stopped up. If a flood came the road would be in great danger. The Clerk was instructed to employ labor to have them opened out. MORA'S ROAD. The Clerk was instructed to call for tenders for the construction of this road, and erection of a bridge, i CEMETERY ROAD. Tenders were ordered to be called for fencing this piece of new road. . Tenders. long bay road. Jas. Cairns, four months, £478 10s. . W. Kenny and Co., six months, £672 10s. J. Woodill, six months, £636. W. Jones and Co., five months, £790. Mr J. Cairns' tender was accepted. OFFICE ON SEC. 83, AKAROA. J. Beecher, £40 10s. G. W. Nalder, £26. Mr Beecher's tender was accepted. STABLE. H. H. Fenton. £15. W. Kenny, £15. Both tenders were declined, and tho Clerk was instructed to write to the Resident Magistrate, offering tho building on tlie terms previously ottered by him. PAYMENTS.' £ s. d. J.
