LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.

/fho ilionthlymeetihg.of this Board was held in Kaituna on Monday, the 2nd inst. Present—Messrs T.H. Parkinson (chairman), Gebbie, Birdling, and Coop. Tlie following correspondence was read:

From the Treasury, Wellington, stating that the sum of £938 8s 8d had been placed to the credit of the district fund account at the Union Bank, being share of £2505 lis 8d at credit of separate account, County of Akaroa, in respect of surplus land revenue £55.000, due on Dec, 31, 1877.

From the manager of the Union Bank, acknowledging the receipt ot the above. From the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, enclosing copy of resolution passed at a meeting of deputations from each Board at Haines' Hotel, -.Hill, Top, on the 28th October, relative to a joint undertaking to form a track from Wainui Saddle to the beach end of. Lake Forsyth, a distance of ten miles.

From the Chairman of the County Council, in relation to tho same subject, and enclosing copy of resolution passed at their meeting on the 27th .nit., making it an instruction to the two Boards to allocate the special grant for the above work as they may agree upon ; also, enclosing specifications for the work, prepared by Mr Fenton. C.l_.

From the Chief Surveyor, in reply, stating that after repeated disappointments, he had been able to obtain the consent of the Surveyor-General that a surveyor should be sent to Little River to rectify and continue the surveys, and promising that on his arrival he should not be removed from that locality until tlie whole of the work is completed.

From the manager of the South British Insurance Company, in reply to a communication from this Board, intimating that the Government cottage situated in Little River Bush had been destroyed during a disastrous bush fire.

From the Springs Road Board, enclosing account for clearing Halswell creek. From Mr A. D. Allan, informing the Board that they are trespassing on his land in making road to cemetery. Several letters were received from Messrs Thornton and Bull, the contractors for picking up and pegging off road lines in Little River Bush ; stating that they had decided to throw up their contract in consequence of not being able to obtain from the Survey Department any guaranteed starting point, so as to enable them to complete the woik satisfactorily, but offering to undertake a trigonometrical survey of a given area and also supply a map of the same upon terms given. The Clerk was directed to inform those gentlemen that the Board' do not think they would be justified in spending the district funds on any work of that description. With reference to the Mount Bossti road, the Akaroa and Wainui Board be informed that a deputation from this Board will meet any-of their members on the 28th. That the Springs Board .be informed that this Board has no objection to pay due proportion of cost of clearing the Halswell, if the work has been satisfactorily performed, and requesting a copy of specifications for the work and copy of agreement with contractor. An application having been made by lumber Bros, for assistance in giving them access to their land on the bank of the Halswell, and another from George Lamb, of Little River, requiring l similar, help, it was made an order to subsidize the first named applicants with the sum of £3, and the Clerk to arrange with the second. On the report on the different works in progress being considered, it was concluded to extend P. Hallahan's contract for clearing 50 chains of bush track, to 100 chains, it heing reported that to stop at the first named figure would be practically useless. The upper bridge at Little River being reported in a dangerous condition, it being necessary to repair it almost weekly, it was resolved to build a new one as soon as possible. It was resolved to call for tenders for bridge; also, carting and spreading 2000 yards of road metal at Ahuriri; also, forming 10 miles of bridle track from the Wainui Saddle to the debouchure of Lake Forsyth, and clearing the remainder of the cemetery road to its junction with the western valley road. Sundry accounts were passed for payment prior to adjournment.
