It is understood that for some time back Mr Barton, M.H.R., has been urging the Government to cause an enquiry to be made into the conduct rf , the Supreme Court Judges regarding himself, but the Government has posi-' tively declined to do so, not considering that there was any necessity. Mr Bar_ ton intimated that in such case he would be compelled to leave Wellington, and in all probability resign his seat in Parliament. Mr Hutchinson's supporters are endeavoring to get the legality of the- ' election of Mr Dransfield as Mayor tested in the Supreme Court. The validity of the election is being disputed on _ several grounds, one being that some five lor six voted who, though on the roll, had no legal right to vote. Nelson, Nov. 28. The Waitam steamer Hauraki went ashore at Waitara River. Her rudder chain parted. She was insured for £1500. Auckland, Nov. 25. •? A fire broke out in a house occupied by Mr Keesing, jun., Lower Hobson street, this morning. The house was 4 totally destroyed, but a portion of the furniture was saved. Mrs Pilldngton's house, 200 yards distant, hatt -Saiarrow "escape, the shingles taking fire, hut' the flames were extinguished. .Keesing's house was insured for £300, and mort- - gaged for £400. . The loss is estimated at nearly £1000.
