AKAROA CHURCH RESERVES.
To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail
Sir,— As you were good enough to draw the attention of your readers to the action which I took at the recent Session of the Diocesan Synod with regard to the Little River Church property belonging to the Parish of Akaroa, and cmveyed to it as compensation for the site of the hospital and bai racks, I venture to ask you to be good enough to publish herewith a copy of the report of the Select Committee which, by leave of the Synod, I nominated to enquire into the matter, an<|. to report upon it. My object in bringing the matter forward was twofold —(1) to prevent the property in question merging into any common Diocesan Church Fund, and (2) to secure it, if possible, to the town of Akaroa. As the enclosed report shows, I succeeded in the first, though I failed in the second. It would be both uninteresting and tiresome to your readers were I to go into the matter at greater length, and I will only ndd that in nominating a Select Committee I endeavored to secure the services and advice of those who were all more or less familiar with the geographical features of Akaroa i i arbour, and that the boundaries of the parish at present existing are those defined in a map in Christ's College, to which I referred for information, bearing date 1854.
Yours, &c,
P. C. ANDERSON, Curate of Akaroa
Akaroa, 4th November.
" To the Venerable the Synod of the Diocese of Christehurch. " Heport of the Select Committee appointed to report on the claim of the town of Akaroa to receive all incomes accruing' from the newly acquired Church property in Little River.
" Present—Revs. P. C. Anderson (Chairman), E. A. Lingard, T..-Flavcll, and his Honor Judge Gresson.
" Your Committee report that having regard to regulations of Synod, page 52, A, Diocesan irfynod proceedings 1877, re ' Local Reserves,' adopted 1862, they are of opinion— " 1. That the land in question in Little River is the property of the entire Parith * of Akaroa as the I>o lindanes of the parish were defined in 1854.
"2. That therefore your Committee cannot recommend that the Town of Akaroa alone should receive all incomes accruing from the newly acquired Church property in Little River. "P. C. ANDEUSOX, Chairman. "Christ's College, Christchurdi, 29th October, 1878."
