Messrs H. Matson and Co. report on tlio live stock market, &c, for the week ending Thursday, Oct. 24. as follows :— Metropolitan Sale Yards.— Yesterday's weekij' market at the Addingtu:i yards v. as folly supplied with sheep, liiit the quantity of mutton on offer was M-nife-l, more especially in the better clnsses. There was a large attendance of •inyera. and mutton sold remarkably well !■!:*.iighont, prices being Is 6d to 2s per head dearer than last week. The want of :aui -ill,-] scarcity of spring feed causes a - v-.tinnci depression in price of all classes < •■ -.-.ills there was but a small entry. ■.;•:•. ■•■>•-is ;;n almost total absence of beef '.; >p market, one or two pens being all !iat .ir.d any claim to the name. The rest were little better than in store condition. For good sorted stores there is a ready sale. but for low-eoivlitoned scrubby sorts competition was very languid. The total yarded for the day comprised 2?o head of cattle, 8176 sheep, and 54 pigs.
In Fat Cattle our principal sales were— 3 nt £12, 3 at£b 10s, 4 at £9,3 at £815s. :■> "t £11, 2 at JS9.-3 at £7 ss, 3 at £7 15s, &c; stoics, 20 at £5 17s 6d, 5 at £3 18s 4 at £3 17s titf, 6 at £3, 3 at £6 15s, 5 at £3 Is, 10 at £ 1 10s, 6at £3 ss. In sheep we sold—93 crossbreds at £1 2s 6d, 220. short horn wethers at 14s, 55 do at 14s, 100 merino wethers at 16s, 80 at 16s, 96 at 16s, 40 cr-is«-breda at 10s, 36 shorn wethers at 14s 6d. 25 at 13s, 443 merino couples at 5s °ri. 10f) onll merinos at ss, 49 ewes at 9'\ 42 at 10s, 415 2-tooth cross-breds at 8s 1 id. 29 at 10s, &c. Fat lambs—lo at 12s, 20 at 11s, 10 at Bs, 8 at 7s, 24 at 7s, 20 at 7s. In pigs we cleared our entry, 33 at 26*. 5 at 225.
Wool, Sheepskins, Hides, and Tallow.— At the usual weekly sale of the above, held this day at our Canterbury stores, 4230 sheepskins, 270 lambskins, 350 ox hide 4 ;, and 126 bags and packages of butchers' rough fat and tallow, enrjjviscd the catalogue. There was a full attendance of buyers, and biddings were fairly spirited, with the following result: — Butchers' cross-breds lartje, f ull-woolled, 7s, 7s Id to 7s 3d each; ditto, medium, three-fourths to full-woolled, 6s 2d, 6ssd to 7s each ; ditto, medium, two-third 3to three-fourths woolled, ss, 5s 6d to 6s 2d each; ditto, medium half to two-thirds woolled,3s 9d, 4s 3d to 5s each ; ditto, small and inferior, 2s 6d, 3s to 3s 9d each. Butchers' merinos, large, well woolled, 5s 10d, 6s 6s 3d each\ ditto, hiedium, two-thirds to three-fourths woolled, ss, 5s 6d to 5s lOd each; ditto, medium, half to two-thirds woolled, 3s 9d, i4s 8d to 5s each ; ditto, small and inferior, 2s, 3s, to 3s 9d each. Lambskins, Is each.
Pelts, Id, 9d to Is 6d each. Country crossbreds, 2s, 3s 9d to 5s 6d each. Country merinos, 2s 6d, 4s to 5s each. Tallow— We offered and sold a large quantity of butchers', rough fat on Thursday at fair prices. The trade was well represented, and the bidding brisk. Best clean, well saved, 2fd to 2fd per lb ; second quality, 2d to 2fd per lb ; inferior and heated. l|d to 2d per lb. Hides—There was a large attendance of buyers, and all lots were cleared as follows : —Lot I—Steers, 3£d per lb, Lot 2—Cows, 3|d per lb. Lot 3 —Special line, 4d per lb. Lot 4—Damaged. 2|d per lb. Lot s—Calfskins, 4£d per lb.
