We notice that Mr Meech is not to have a walk over for the office of Mayor of Akaroa. In another column appears a requisition, asking Mr C. W. Bridge to come forward, to which request Mr Bridge has acceded. It is a healthy sign when suitable men look upon these positions as desirable marks of the confidence and respect of their fellow citizens, instead of considering the sacrifice of time they involve as more than the honor is worth.

Our contributor, Mr John has left at our office an alarum clock, which he gives as a prize for the neatest and tastiest specimen of patchwork to be shewn at the forthcoming industrial exhibition. Our contributor wishes to say that he does hot intend entering any of his garments for competition, although he thinks that, for variety of colors, and mixture of materials, one pair of his inexpressibles would take a lot of beating, in more ways than one. We hope that this generosity on the part of our eccentric contributor will stimulate others to go and do likewise. We shall be happy to take charge of any objects forwarded for this purpose, end hand them to the secretary of the proposed exhibition.

A meeting of the Begatta Committee was held in Bruce's hotel, on Friday evening last. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. A letter was received and considered from the Lyttelton Yacht Club, threatening to take legal proceedings against the Committee unless the prize money, in the disputed race between the Venture and Fleetwing, was paid over to them. It was ngreed to refer the Club to the Committee's previous correspondence on the subject, and allow them to take any action they might be advised in the matter. Messrs Black, H. B. Bridge, La Coste» and Wright were appointed a sub-com-mittee to draw up a programme and report to a full meeting of the Committee to be held piiran. early, evening.; ■• After passing several accounts in connection with the previous regatta, the Committee adjourned.

The usual meeting of the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, which should have been held at the Office, Head of the Bay, on Saturday afternoon last, lapsed for want of a quorum. Mr Duxbury, Chairman, who was present adjourned the meeting till Saturday next, the 2nd pros., when the business of the lapsed meeting, and other matters will be taken up.

By advertisement which appears elsewhere, it will be seen that the nomination of candidates for seats in the County Council takes place on Wednesday, November 6, and the polling on the 13th. It behoves electors and candidates to be stirring betimes to fill the vacant seats with suitable men. Questions of the greatest importance will come before the new Council, more especially in regard to the delicate point of the more or less concurrent powers of the Council and the various Road Boards. Beyond vague rumors, we have not heard of any fresh candidates being in the field, nor even whether the present members all intend to offer themselves for re-election. A new member will be required for the Tai Tapu riding, and only two instead of three will be returnable for Le Bon's, Okain's and Little Akaloa.

Our readers' attention is drawn to an extensive sale advertised in another column to take place to-morrow. Mr C. W. Bridge acts as auctioneer, and the sale will take place at the Beach Store, next Daly's Jetty, and a great variety of useful articles of every description will be offered. From the genuine character of a former sale of Mr Daly's we anticipate a like success for this one, and Relieve that heads of families, hotel-keepers, farmers, and others will find it to their advantage to attend this sale.

A meeting of those interested in promoting the usual sports at the Head of the on Boxing Day, was held at the Somerset Hotel on Saturday evening last. Mr B. The Secretary reported that the late Committee had a balance of £22 16s 6d in hand) and it was resolved to have the sports on the usual day, the 26th Dec. It another column will be found an adver" tisement of some theatrical performances by the Murray troupe, who have travelled overland from Christchurch, and propose giving two entertainments in Akaroa on /Frfday and Saturday evenings next. The 'troupe, whjclj. consists of juveniles, are well jspoken of J .sind we , believe, achieved a jgreat success at Little River and the Head ipf the B/yy.
