The nor'-wester has done great damage in nearly every township of the Province. Houses and chimneys have been blown down, while many railway Stations and goods sheds have greatly suffered. Railway communication between Christchurch and Timaru is interrupted, three spans of the Rangitata bridge of over a hundred and twenty feet being washed away. The Waimakariri also has greatly risen, and done damage in the old place, again stopping traffic. The Rakaia has also risen very high, and it "is expected that the old bridge over this river will be impassable to-morrow. The northwester still continues. Ashburton, Sept. 26. Two double sets of piles were carried away in the R.ngitata bridge this morning by heavy freshes in the river. The 7.5 train from Ashburton halted at the South Rangitata. Several of the passengers effected a'passage acrosr. the bridge on planks, and were met by the Timaru train which returned to that town. The express from Christchurch was not allowed to proceed beyond Ashburton. The. 11.5 train from Ashburton proceeded to South Rangitata, where the
the passengers were then waiting. It is supposed they will have to return tonight. Conyers, accompanied by Lowe left Rakaia for the sceue of the disaster this morning. It is believed it will take several days to repair the damage. The South Rakaia bridge is also in a very critical condition. It is,.feared that the up-train will be unable; to cross this afternoon. All the rivers are flooded, yesterday's gale uplifting} several buildings levelled many chimneys, and caused other considerable damage throughout the district.
