AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD

Saturday, Sept. 14.

The usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held at its offices at the Head of the Bay on the above date. Present—Messrs Duxbury (in the chair), Curry, Williams, Shadbolt, and McDonald. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were received— From the Treasury, intimating that a sum of £681 13s 2d had been placed to the credit of the Board. From the Colonial Secretary, asking for certain returns of revenue and expenditure, ordered by the House of Representatives to be laid on the table. It was ordered that the information required be furnished, and that clerical assistance be employed in preparing the return. Messrs H. Worsley and D. Curry waited on the Board to request that a slight deviation might be made in the Grehan Valley road, to get a better gradient. The Clerk was ordered to visit and report. Mr J. Wardle applied for return of his deposit on his contract.for the Okain's Bay road diversion. Mr Wardle was informed that he should be paid in full as soon as the necessary pipeswere to hand, which were expected in a few,days. . From the Akaroa Borough Council, ealling'the Board's attention to the bad state of the" main road from the foot of German Bay hill to the entrance to .the the Borough, and requesting them to cause it to be repaired. .. • j| It was agreed that the Council 4>e 'wT* formed that the work had been put'ip-' hand. •£•'"■ 4

From the same, enclosing account, for half cost for erection of the lanip at Waeckerle's corn3r. : The Council to be informed that the Board will pay half the cost of erection, but decline to pay portion of expense of maintenance. From J. Aylmer, Esq., R.M., asking when the Board would be prepared to give up possession of the section on which their office stands in Akaroa. Resolved —That Mr Aylmer be informed that if the Government were prepared to take the buildings at a fair valuation, they would give up possession at once, if not, they would jequire time to dispose of them. From Mr A. C. Knight, stating that as the Board had not answered his offer te exchange of lands for roads, he had decided to close the road now being used by the public through his property. On the motion of Mr Williams, it was resolved that Mr Knight be informed " That the Board are willing to entertain his proposal, providing none of the roads contemplated to be diverted lead to any other property, and that Mr Knight bear the whole cost of surveying the old roads, with the exception of the old Wainui road, and the road leading toMrC. Bates' sections, in which case road for road will be given, the Board bearing charge of survey, for the purpose of bringing the whole under < The Public Works Act, 1876.'" From Mr W. B. Tosswill, appealing to the Board to prevent some building which was going on on the Chain Reserve, on the boundary of his property. Mr Tosswill to be informed that the Board understood that tho building in

question was on private land, and if it were not, that they had no right to interfere. From Mr C. W. Bridge, stating that he considered it very doubtful whether the power of attorney he held was sufficient to enable him to convey land belonging to Mr R. Townsend. * It was agreed to put the French Farm road through under the Public Works Act. From the same, agreeing to act as valuator in conjunction with Mr Piper. From Mr G. W. Nalder, re convcvance of land to be purchased from Mr <_. Lelievre, and maintaining that the Surveyor, and not the Solicitor, waa responsible for any misdescriptions and inaccuracies in the plans and description attached to a conveyance. From Mr H. H. Fenton, suggesting that some different arrangement be made with regard to remuneration for.his .services. Mr Williams was of opinion that the entire services of Mr Fenton nnd Mr Wilkin should be secured by the Board. Ultimately, as Messrs Curry and Shadbolt had left, it was agreed to defer the consideration of the question to a full meeting of the Board. From the same, stating that no unusual difficulties would be experienced in constructing a road between Germay Bay Valley and Mr James Bell's. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr James Brown to ascertain what he would require for allowing the road to be taken through his land. From the same, promising specification of the upper portion of the Mount Boasu road by next Wednesday. The Clerk was instructed to call for tenders for the work. From the same, forwarding tracing of Libeau's road, which is to be closed, for the purpose of being sent in to the Government. payments. The following accounts were passed for payment :— J. Kenny, fourteen days, £2 per chain; drains, 9s per chain ; culverts, 4s per foot. W. Kenny's tender was accepted. AYLMER'S VALLEY ROAD. H. Edmondson and Co., two months, £2 12s 6d per chain, informal. W. Jones, six weeks, £2 ls per chain ; culverts, 4s per foot. W. Maltby, two months, £2 per chain. 1 P. S. Johnson and Co., informal. Sigley and Dixon, one month, £1 10s per chain. W. Kenny, one month, £1 7s per chain —£45 7s 6d. J. Bray and Co., seven weeks, £1 10s per chain—£49 10s. W. Kenny's tender was accepted. The Chairman was authorized to sign cheques for Keegan's," Lelievre's, and Piper's land compensations, conditional on the conveyances being signed. *-, The meeting then adjourned to Saturday, * the 21st inst., at noon. ■
