London, Sept. 4. An excursion steamer, bound for London from Sheerness, was run down, and 55 persons are known to have perished. The British fleet will shortly be withdrawn from the Sea of Marmora to the entrance of the Dardanelles. The Australians won the match at the Oval against the players of England by eight runs ; the second innings of the Australians being 88 runs, and the second innings of the players being 76 runs. The bowling of the Australians was very effective. Mr Spofforth took four •wickets. A pleasure steamer called the Princess Alice collided with another steamer off Woolwich and sunk immediately, 55 persons being drowned. Sept. 5. The number drowned by the sinking of the excursion steamer off Woolwick was 528. Only four percent of the passengers and the whole of the crew were saved. The Queen joins in the general sympathy. The Lord Mayor receives subscriptions for the widows and orphans. It is reported that Midhat Pasha has "been appointed Govenor-General of Asia Minor.
