It is stated that Mr Wakefield will attack the Government finance and taxation to-day, and will probably conclude with moving that all subsidies whatever ibe withdrawn, and that full powers be given to the local bodies to impose direct taxation to meet the requirements of their respective districts. Christchurch, Sept. 2. In the divorce of Digby the evidence conclusively proved that the respondent, who is an actress named Nelly Daly, committed adultery in Dunedinin March last with a member of Mr Wheatleigh's company. Neither the respondent nor the co-respondent were present. The jury found for the petiiioner without leaving th& box. The usual decree was made. TuiAßu, Sept. 2. Shortly, after five last evening, the ketch Glimpse, which had been gradually drifting towards shore at Caroline Bay, touched the beach, about 300 or 400 yards off the brignntine Lapwing, the rollers breaking over her, and smashing her foremast.. She had been taking in 800 cases of preserved meat from Port Chalmers. ■ Most probably all the cargo will be saved. The ketch Palmerston is still weathering it out, but drifted during the night. It is expected that ? her captain's body will be washed ashore. Subscriptions will be raised, and an entertainment given on behalf of the distressed seamen.
