We have much pleasure in calling the attention of our readers to a meeting o_ committee to arrange for a dinner to the Railway Trust, which is to be held tomorrow morning, at Bruce's Hotel. As this meeting has to make final arrangements, it is most important that they should have definite information before them as to the amount of support to the project which can be relied on. We hope, therefore, that all those who can will attend, and that those who cannot do bo will communicate with the hon. sec, Mr J. F. Roberts, stating definitely how many tickets they are prepared to take. We decidedly owe a debt of gratitude to the members of the Trust for past services, and even accepting the cynical definition of the word, viz., " a lively sense of favors to come," it would be well for our own welfare to show by our action in this matter that we take some interest in the successful carrying out of a scheme which must have an extraordinary effect on the prosperity of the district with whose fortunes our own are bound up. The following letter from Mr Montgomery to Mr Nalder has been kindly placed at our disposal by the latter gentleman. It will be seen that our indefatigable representative has been gratified by the interest displayed here in the work which he is ko zealously endeavoring to forward in Ins place in the Legislature :— Wellington, 10th August, 1878. My dear Mr Nalder, —I duly received your note of the 2nd instant with the accompanying address very numerously signed. It gives me great pleasure to learn that the people of the Akaroa district are taking such a lively interest in this truly important work. They may rest assured that I shall give my best attention to the matter. —Believe me, yours faithfully, W. Montgomery. From a thoroughly reliable source we glean the following, which will no doubt interest many of our readers who hail from the " Land of cakes" :— u The Presbyterian Churches in Scotland, represented by a little over 3000 congregations, gave Religions instructions last year to 500,000 young people in Sabbath Schools and Bible Classes and contributed, by voluntary effort, exclusive of Government aid, £1,200,000 for religious purposes." During the debate on the Lakes Ellesmere and Forsyth Reclamation and Akaroa Railway Trust Bill in Committee of the whole House last Thursday, Sir Robert Douglas complained that no land had actually beenireclaimedibefore the Bill was brought into the House. Mr Saunders replied that if any of the land had been reclaimed it would have been folly to have brought the Bill in at all, as Sir Robert Douglas and his colleagues in the North Island would have instantly proposed that the reclaimed land should be made the property of the Colony. The honorable member for Cheviot decidedly scored one on that occasion, the hankering which Northern members have after Southern lands being well known. At the Parish Meeting convened for last Wednesday evening, Mr Nicholls was appointed Parishioners' Churchwarden, vice Mr Wagstaff, iesigned ; and Mr H. Worsley was elected a Vestryman. A unanimous vote of thanks was accorded Mr Wagstaff for his services. The first committee meeting to promote the Industrial Exhibition, proposed to be held here in December next, will take place this evening at Bruce's Hotel. We hope to see a good attendance, the object sought to be attained being highly desirable. It is notified that all teachers are ex officio members of Committee. We desire to call attention to an advertisement in another column, convening a meeting of the ratepayers in the Little River District, at the Road Board office, Kaituna, on Monday next, the 19th inst., for the purpose of deciding upon a proper division of the district in the event of the County Council declaring that the riding shall be represented in future by two members. The following is a portion of a letter signed " Veracity," which appeared in the columns of the Press of Wednesday last: " Permit me as one of those who were present to say that in my opinion it embodied the "gist" of his speech, which I should think ought to get him some votes in the Tai Tapu district whenever he seeks their favors. Mr Joblin was only eighteen miles wrong in his calculations, for , a line passing through Tai Tapu to Addington would be twelve miles longer, whereas he makes it six miles shorter." i

Mr C. W. Bridge held an important sale of furniture, &c, at Wagstaff's Hotel, yesterday. Despite the inclemency of the weather there was a good attendance, and, the bidding on the whole was spirited. We observe that it is notified by advertisement in another column that as only:a few lots could be offered yesterday, the balance will be put up to-day. Mr Bridge will also sell on Monday some valuable dairy stock at the Head of the Bay saleyards.

• The contractor for letting out Lake Ellesmere, Mr Thos. M'Cartney (says the Press), has accomplished bis task after considerable-trouble, having twice-had the water running and being blocked up again by the heavy surf. This, in connection with the prevalent north-west winds, which forced the water to the eastern end, and the fact of the lake being let out at nearly four inches lower level than hitherto, rendered the task a very difficult
