THE POOR ROAD BOARD AGAIN.

To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail.

Sib, —Will you kindly allow me epace in your valuable paper to say a few words in answer to a letter re land compensation, and signed " Hopeful/ which appeared in your issue of the 2nd inst. Now, Sir, 'tis veryclear that "Hopeful* , knows very little about what he is writing. He says he questions whether the ratepayers are aware of the manner in which their funds are dribbled away. Again, he cays 'tis true that a farmer claiine fiftypounds for compensation for an acre of land in Akaloa, and that the claim is most exorbitant.

Now, Sir, 'tis true that « Hopeful * expected to get half of this fifty pounds, but through eouae misunderstanding his landlord did not give it to him, and now he strives to throw dirty water on the Road Board. Again, he tries to mislead your readers when he cays £50 for an acre of land—he does not tell you there is 25 chain of fencing, and the entire severance of water from a portion of the farmer's land, and the road going through the centre of a stockyard. But, however, I think it would be a good thing for the ratepayers if they could get a few sapienta like " Hopeful" to manage their- Road Boards. Yours, &c,

JOHN B. BABKEB. Little Akaloa, August 5.
