Census returns, showing the total population of the whole colony are now? completed — males, 230,898 ; females, 183,213 ; total, 414,111 ; in this is included 4302 Chinese, but no Maoris. The population of the Chatham Islands is 104 males and 2 females. Tim Ann, May 27. Shewing the high price paid for land in South Canterbury, Jonas Hart disposed of Quinn Bros.' farm, Makihihi, of 740 acres for £16,500, over £22 per acre. A section of land, consisting of 32 perches, in Timaru, opposite the Police Station, sold for £800. Dund'ik, May 27. The. erection of the new Roman Catholic Cathedral is about to be commenced here. It will cost £26,000, and hold 2000 people when finishel. It is proposed to erect only nave and aisle at present. The cost of, this will bex£6ooo, and will accommodate 800.
