Dr Hector, by request, having tested the kerosene by which the late fatal accident was caused, reports :—" The flashing point of this oil is 105 degrees fahrcnheit. It has been warmed to 110 degrees. It flashes at 100 degrees or even less. The oil is therefore petroleum, and is dangerous in the meaning of the Dangerous Goods Act, 1869, and under the 15th clause should not be sold except in vessels marked—" Dangerous, no light to be brought near."
Market quotations : —Fat cattle at auction realised £9 15s to £11 10s, averaging 36s 6d per lOOlbs: two to three-year old steers and heifers, £6 15s to £7 10s ; fifteen to eighteen months, £4 15s ; good dairy cows, £17 10s to £14 10s ; good demand for sheep and cross-bred lambs at 5s 6d to 6s 6d; merino ewes, full mouthed, 3s lid ; draught horses, £48 to £57 ; medium, £38 to £45 ; light, £29 to £32; hacks and light harness, £17 15s upwards. Chkistchukch, May 6. Malvern Hill coal is now being used on railways with satisfactory results.
At the Magistrate's Court to-day, J. M.- Fitzgerald, licensee of a suburban hotel, was fined £4 for spitting in the face of a Mrs Williamson outside the Court. Mrs Williamson had been a witness in a case against Fitzgerald, for illegal liquor selling
Timaru, May 6
The survey of the Railway Extension from Albury to Burkes Pass, McKenzie Country, has been'commenccd. It is expected to be finished in three weeks. Dunedin, May 6.
Two hotels were totally destroyed by fire at Kingston yesterday. The fire originated in Keir's, upstairs, and extended afterwards to Anderson's. Three men roasted to cinders, John Dougherty, K. McCann, and the third is unknown. Only a small amount of personal property was saved. There were no appliances available for extinguishing the fire when discovered;
It is when a boy finds himself, without any solicitation on his part, assigned to a position between the ruler and his' teachers knee, that he feels the imperative necessity, or at least the desirability of ordering the immediate mobilization of all his forces.
A health journal says : " The clothes of different families should, for sanitary reasons, be wahed apart." Our lamidryman goes still farther, he washes our shirts and buttons apart.
