William O'Connor was charged today at the R. M. Court, with attempting to poison Wm. Li_r'ht. According to Light's evidence, ho only knew prisoner three week.. Last Sunday night, before going to bed he paid for board and lodgings ; he was going to leave next day. Light asked him to have a parting drink. After bringing the drinks in, the bell rang for some drink upstairs. He served them, and came back, and pulled up his chair to have five minutes' chat with O'Connor, when he noticed something white on the rim of his glass, and down the inside. He asked prisoner what that meant, who said, I suppose you have got a dirty glass. Witness tasted the powder from the inside of the glass, and found' it Very bitter, and said, " Oh, Lord, what a beastly taste." After O'Connor went to bed, Light examined the hearthrug where O'Connor had been sitting, and found some crystals on the rug. The prosecution obtained a remand for eight days. Bail refused.

A servant girl named Barnes was trying to blow out a kerosene lamp last night, when it exploded. In a second, the girl was in flames. Rugs, blankets, &c, were wrapped round her. The injuries she received, however, were so bad that she died at four o'clock this morning. Dunedin, May 2. Larnach and Driver's estate, near Tapanui, consisting of 14,000 acres, with 16,000 sbeep, was sold to Watson Sherman, at a price about equal to £70,000.
