OKAIN'S ROAD BOARD.

To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail,

Sir, —You will greatly oblige me by in ■ serting the following remarks in vindication of myself, and my conduct, in the recent case of the Board v. Callaghan : —

About the beginning of the present month, the Clerk ot the above Board" waited upon me, and requested me to sign a protest against the, as he alleged illegality of Mr P. Callaghan's election as a member of the Board, he saying that nothing could be done in the matter without my signature. After considerable demur, I at last,, on his stating that the Board would be in a mess if this matter of the legality or otherwise of the election was not at once settled, reluctantly came to Akaroa and signed the document. Of course, I took it for granted that theClerk, with his many years' experience,, was thoroughly posted up in these matters, and that he was not likely to mislead me or the Board.

I distinctly deny having any communication with Mr Barker, as I also deny the statement of my being used as a "catspaw"' for that gentleman " and Co."

In conclusion, I wish it to be distinctly understood that I am not in this matter, or any other, connected with any relative and that I have nothing to do with thereported sayings and doings of any mem- *-. ber or official connected with the board. Yours, &c, THOS. OLDRIDGE.
