IMPROVEMENTS AT LITTLE RIVER.

To ihe Editor of-the Akaroa Mail.

. Sir,—l have read a paragraph in the last issue of your paper, pointing out the great improvements which are taking place at Little River. But whoever J. W. is, he has overlooked a'great many things in. connection with- the onward pace which this place is assuming at present. New buildings are being erected, and others are soon to follow,, so that this place will .shortly be a town in reality.; and as for sports and amusements, I think that I can safely say that no other place on Banks Pehinf-ula can equal it. We have got our Cricket Club and also our Good Templars' Lodge, and last, but not least, we have a very promising Oddfellows' Society just springing into existence, so that it will be. seen that the- people of Little River are; determined, to keep pace with the times in

matters useful to society. Little: River can »lso boast of its Quadrille Class, but I very much doubt whether it will be a success, owing .to its ■ conservative principles. I understand it is chiefly composed of a chosen few, who will be known in future as the •• upper, ten," or elect of the place. Before an outsider is allowed to join in the M'able Waltz, it will be necessary for him or her to produce a satisfactory pedigree, that is, he must be a village policeman, a boot and shoemaker, a baker, or oxen conductor, and I would infer, from the male lineage, that the fair sex will be real ladies. Such are the necessary qualifications for a candidate before he can be accepted as a member. The outside public may not be aware that the Little River is assuming such large proportions, but 'tis a fact nevertheless—no plebeians need apply. Yours, _c, ■'. TAM O'SHANTER.
