INTERPROVINCIAL TELEGRAMS.
(From the Press Agency.) Napier, March 14. The correspondent to the Herald gives aji account of some limestone caves having been discovered near Teatu. They are described as being magnificent, with stalactites hanging from the roof and sides. One cave that was entered was very extensive, and had many lateral chambers. There were columns strewed about, some whole and some broken, rendering progress difficult. In one place there was a miniature lake, surrounded with pale green shrubs ; in another, the exploring party came upon a number of petrified bones, some very large, and also three human figures—man, woman, and child. Near the group, on the opposite side of the cave, there were rude sketches of warfare, the countenances apparently not of the present race of Maoris. The discovery has been placed in the hands of the Government. Nelson. March 14. At the Police-court to-day, two wellknown citizens were charged with a breach of the peace, in connection with the Joseph affair. The police asked that they might be bound over to keep the peace. The Court was crowded, and evidence of the ill-treatment of Joseph was very weak. Mr Pitt made a forcible defence. The Bench said that they thought it was clear the defendants han taken part in the tumultuous proceedings to the annoyance of the Queen's subjects, and they did not think they were at all likely to repeat the proceedings, so dismissed them with a caution. Dunedin, March 14. An exhaustive enquiry. is going on, touching the death of a child recently found in a soap-box at Blueskin. The
mother is a Mrs De Costa, of Timaru, and she declares the child died, and that she gave it to a man, who promised to bury it for £5. She did not know who the man was. The inquiry was 'adr*. journed till Monday, to discover the truth or otherwise of her statement.
