The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22.
Elsewhere will be found an obituary notice of the death of another old settler, in the person of Mr Richard Rowe, of Ridge grove, Children's Bay. Mr Rowe arrived in this colon}', from India, in May, 1857, and in August following he removed to Akaroa, where he purchased the Children's Bay property, built himself a house, and quietl}' settled down with his family. In the early days of Provincial Institutions, the deceased gentleman took a lively interest in all public matters connected with the weal of Banks Peninsula, and was elected a member of die Provincial Council for the town of Akaroa, in which body he represented that constituency for a period of four years. Since his retirement from that position, Mr Rowe took but little interest in political matters, failing health necessitating his leading a life of quietude. The deceased gentleman was not as well known by the present inhabitants of this district as he was by the older settlers. Those vrho, like'ourselves, had the pleasure of a closer acquaintance with Mr Rowe, knew him to be a man of sound and varied information, sterlingly honest and punctually exact in his dealings. For a considerable period Mr Rowe had been a great sufferer from, we believe rheumatic gout, so that his demise was not altogether unexpected. The deceased leaves a widow and trrown-up family to mourn their bereavement.
