PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, AKAROA.

The last quarterly meeting of the above for the congregational year, ending Feb. 13, 1878, was held on Mxmday, 18th instant, in the Presbyterian Church. All the members, excepting Mr Bruce, who had been unavoidably detained, were present. The minutes of former meeting were read and confirmed. Collectors reported, and it was found lhat two or three quarterly subscriptions had not yet been paid, but would be in a week or so. From this circumstance, partly, the Treasurer reported a deficiency in the funds for the quarter. A conversation followed as to the necessity of all, as far as possible, giving their help, there being a goodly number in the congregation from one cause or another not subscribing. It was believed that one source of difficulty in supporting the Church was, that a number considered what was given for the cause of God was so much money thrown away and lost, forgetting that Christian liberality would be rewarded, if not in this life, in the next.

Itwas the general impression in the Committee that, as perhaps, thoughtlessness had a good deal to do with the difficulties felt apparently by all the churches, it would be well to call the people's attention to the matter, if it could be done in such a way as not to give offence. It was stated, however, that hitherto the great body of the people had most steadily and regularly supported the church, and that if it bad not been for extraordinary outlay, -the funds would still have been, in credit; but even as matters Btood, it was thought possible to tide over the year. The Committee then opened the lists sent with nominees for a new committee. It was found that fifteen gentlemen bad been nominated ; out of these a committee was chosen in the usual way, the names to be intimated at the annual meeting. _ It was decided to have a tea meeting as hitherto, and Mr Douglas said he Would endeavour to secure the requisite number of ladies to give trays. (We understand he has done so.) It was decided that the old committee should hold office till the annual meeting, which is to take place in a few weeks. The meeting was then brought to a close.
