LITTLE RIVER R.M. COURT.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL'

Sir, —Permit me to refer to a case that was heard at the Court here on Saturday, the 19th ult., and reported in the Mail, in which A. L>. Allan is plaintiff and myself defendant. Knowing the case was to be heard on Saturday, and finding I could not attend without serious inconvenience, I rode to Akaroa on the preceding Thursday, and requested the R.M. to defer the hearing till the following Tuesday, or to such other day as would suit his convenience ; assigning my reasons for the request. I left him, under the impression that my request would be acceded to. Believing that to myself and to others circumstanced as I am, the habit of indulging in threats and petty legal proceedings is reprehensible, and as an example pernicious, I have ever sedulously sought to avoid acquiring it, and have been enabled during the many years I have resided here, to avoid bringing any settler before the Court. This course may have involved temporary annoyance and some loss, but the retrospect is one that affords me satisfaction. Mr Allan's claim against me is a just one, but I have a claim against him equally just, for an amount exceeding that of his claim against me and I was desirous that both claims should have been before the Court at the same time, This my absence prevented.—Yours, &c, G. R. JOBLIN. Little River January 30th, 1878.
