American Mirror and Fanner The best butter cow of which we have a reliable account was-bought by a farmer ■out of a drove on its way from Mtrine to Brighton, about the year 18]& The fiarmer's name, was Oakes, and tiifc cow, when she became /ainous, was ' known __ as the Oakes cow. She was purchased .from Mr Oakes by his brother, a shoemaker, who kept her until she died. ; Her butter-making capacity .coming to the knowledge of the Massachusetts ' Agricultural Society,'one of the trustees visited Mr Oakes and engaged him to put her on trial and report thfe result. This trial took place in 18J G, and from May 17th to December 20th of; that year the cow made on an average it fraction <ffer sixteen pounds of butter |>er week, 'Desides furnishing a quart of milk a day 1 to Mr Oakes' family. . Her feed consisted of grass and a bushel ■of \Jtt{Hfcn corn meal per week, -which was feiven her Hirred into her own milk"*Mter it was skimmed.
