THE VALUE OF TIME.
■ ——_+ •fO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sib, —I occupy an elevated and exceedingly respectable place. In fact, if you will not think me vain to say it, who stjould not; lam the highest official in the church. It will readily occur to you, S|r, such being my status in society, that it becomes me, as seldom as possible, to •degrade or disgrace myself; but, not having command of my tongue, though my femper is confessedly good, I grieve to pay I am so often led into the ungentlemanly practice of lying, that the confidence of the public in my veracity is seriously shaken. I put it to you, Mr Editor, if this is not most damaging to usefulness in my . calling. Now I wish seriously and most , earnestly to reform ; arid, it is because, like a man of genius and sense, as you : are, you have hit upon the exact plan to , bring about this* reformation, that I send you fervent thanks for your valuable suggestion, and second your proposal. You will understand hie, when I say that nry unfortunate failing is in misleading as to the proper time of day. It is a singular habit: a mere pecadillo, but it disturbs my conscience, and I want a sound reformation to take place. If that town clock you were so happy as to suggest were in position, I believe it would shame me out of my irregularities, and bring me at. once to peace of mind and the possession of that unblemished character so necessary for one discharging useful functions. Now then, dear Mr Editor, pray do agitate the town clock proposal; do let the Honourable Mayor get no peace till he has signalised his term of office in so useful and necessary a direction. This is the humble and earnest petition of your too often erring neighbour. TINTINABULUM.
