PIGEON BAY SCHOOL SPORTS.

The'above sports took place on New Year's Day, on a well selected spot in Messrs Hay's large paddock, on the flat near their homestead. The weather was all that could be desired ; a nice breeze blowing in from the sea. By the united efforts of the members of the School Committee, and other gentlemen, refreshments ■were on the ground in abundance, as well as an ample supply of books, toys, and ornaments of various kinds,'brought on the ground to be competed for. The following is a programme of the sports:— Starter, Mr A. White ; handicappers, Messrs Reynish arid W. Patoh ; judge, Mr Scott; clerk of the course, Mr F. W. Thompson. Flat Race, boys under 12— R. Pettigrew, 1; L. Scott, 2 ; Walter Goodwin, 3. Flat Race, boys under 15— A. J. Goodwin, 1 ; C. White, 2 ; Wni. Goodwin and F. Firm stone. 3. Flat Race, boys under 15— R. Lyall, 1; A. J. Goodwin, 2 ; Wm. Goodwin, 3. Flat Race, Mr Ashton's special prizes— C. Lyall, 1; W. Pettigrew, 2 ; C. Goodwin, 3. Flat Race, girls under 14—A. Hunt, 1 ; E. Lyons, 2 ; L. Cross, 3. Three-legged Race, boys under 15— W. Goodwin and F. Firmstone, 1 ; G. Pettigrew and W. Seed, 2 ; R. Lyall and C. White, 3. Flat Race, girls under 9—L. Cross, 1 ; E. Lyons, 2 : G. Goodwin, 3. Thiee-legged Race, boys under 12— "Walter Goodwin and R. Pettigrew, 1 ; D. White and W. lunes, 2; D. Hunt and J. Lyons, 3. Standing High Jump, boys under 12— E. Pettigrew, 1; L. Scott. 2 ; D. Hunt, 3. Vaulting, boys under 15— R. Lyall, 1; F. Firmstone, 2. The competition was keen and well contested throughout. There was also a foot race for married ladies, in which eight ladies competed ; and another for unmarried ladies, in which six competed. The sports were concluded about four p.m., all having apparently enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The company shortly after that time quickly dispersed to their several homes.
