PUBLIC MEETING AT LITTLE RIVER.
A public meeting was held at the schoolroom, Little. Eiver, on Mondaj- evening, by direction of the Board of Education, to elect a member of the School Committee in place of Mr Powrie, resigned ; and also to elect a member to serve on the Cemetery Trust.
Mr A. Degg (Chairman of the School Committee) read the directions from the Board of Education relating to the object of the meeting.
Mr Stahbury said that he desired to do what good he .could :f or the place, and. that he ohjected to Mr Degg being 'chairman, as he did not speak loud enough or plain enough, and could not be understood. He would, therefore, propose Mr Tyson, who was an old inhabitant.
Mr Degg expressed his willingness to vacate the chair.
Mr G. R. Joblin thought Mr Stanbury was acting , very strangely. Mr" Degg, though at times speaking with hesitation, displayed much interest in all matters relating to the school, was very attentive to his duties, and, apart from the slight defect adverted to, was well qualified for the position of chairman. . This meeting had nothing to do with the election of a chairman, but was called by the Board of Education to elect a member to the committee in place of Mr Povvrie. Mr Tyson then proposed Mr Stanbury for the office. . ■
Mr Joblin said there would shortly be a meeting for the annual election, "when a larger attendance of householders might be expected than were present that evening. Under those circumstances he 'would second Mr Tyson's nomination.- ;This was carried.
Mr Tyson then proposed that a chairman should be elected in place of Mr.Degg, and some discussion ensiuid.-
Mr Joblin contended that Mr Degg.could not be ousted till the annual meeting in January.
On reference being made to the Edu cation Ordinance, this was found to be the case.
Mr Tyson then called attention to a sum of 3a 4d which Mr Powrie had not accounted for before leaving.
Mr John Iteynolds said that it evidently arose from some oversight, and it was hardly in order to bring the matter forward at a public meeting, and at the request of Mr J.oblin,.the chairman said he would write to Mr Powrie on the subject. Mr John lleynolda then nominated Mr Westropp as member for the Cemetery Trust. ■
