The number of Candidates being in excess of the number of offices . to be filled, a POLL will be taken at.the Offices of the Borough Council, Lavaud Street, Akaroa, on WEDNESDAY, the 28th day of NOVEMBER instant, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. a. iNNES McGregor, Returning Officer. ' I have now been a resident of Akaroa for thirty-seven years, and during the whole of my long residence here, have always taken a part in all public matters tending to advance the interests of the borough and district. My actions in public business have always been dictated by considerations * for the public good, and not for personal aggrandisement in any shape or form ; 'this, my actions in the late Provincial : Council, on the original Works Committee, on the Road Board, and in the Borough Council, will abundantly show. If elected, I promise to give every attention to the duties of my office ; to act with thorough impartiality on all matters concerning the borough's weal; V to'do my utmost in furtherance of the business of the borough, and to, in every way" that I possibly can, work for its ultimate good. TO THE BURGESSKS OF AKAROA. - 11 /~1 ENTLEMEN,—In retiring from XSJT the list of Candidates to the office of Mayor, at the Ensuing Election, I am actuated by motives, which the light thinking amongst you must agree with, and which few could condemn. It became to me a certainty that the approaching Contest was degenerating into mere partizanship and party feeling— that it no longer was a question of Electing the most Suitable Person for the Office, and that, favoritism and the cry of " Ends-against End " -were to mack the proceedings. Gentlemen, under such circumstances, I had too high an opinion of the honorable position I sought to obtain, than to drag it, * and myself into the dirt, by allowing myself to be Nominated and Contest an Election where such a spirit was likely to be exhibited, and I certainly should |& not have considered it an honour to have been Elected under such circumstances.
