LAKES ELLESMERE AND FORSYTH RECLAMATION AND AKAROA RAILWAY TRUST.
A meeting of the above took place on Tuesday, the 20th inst, at the Beach Arms Hotel, Lake Ellesmere. Present—Messrs E. C. Latter (chairman), Rev. A. P. O'Callaghan, Dalglish, Gebbie, J. Bell, and Marshall.
The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the chairman read a letter from Mr Lunn, returning officer, stating that Mr David Marshall had been elected as a member of the Trust in the place of Mr Frankish, deceased.
A report furnished by the engineer was read and received, the members expressing disappointment that the main point required by the Trust was not embodied therein.
The engineer, who was in attendance, stated that he had not had sufficient time to make a fuller report, as he had been ill for some 14 days. The chairman said that the meeting had been called for this date to receive a report as to the feasibility of keeping open the outlet of the lakes. On this depended their future action with regard to the direction of the proposed line of railway. The engineer stated that he had not understood that this was the point required by the Trust, and guaranteed to have the necessary reports and plans in reference to it prepared in ten working days. This being distinctly understood, the Rev A. P. O'Callaghan proposed that the neit meeting of the Trust be held on Thursday, December 6, to receive Mr Lathams report.
Mr Latham stated that, as yet, no assistant engineer had been employed, and that he would inform the Trust 'directly such an appointment was made. The chairman was instructed to purchase a boat for the use of the engineer. The meeting then adjourned.
