The Mayor declined calling a public meeting to express" an opinion on the 'political situation, giving as his reason tthat as the business of such meeting would be a discussion of general politics, he, as Mayor, should keep aloof, and therefore declined officially to do anything which might be construed into political bias in a municipal functionary. Wellington, November 19.
Hone Nahe having been appointed a Minister, Grace, jun., has been appointed interpreter to the Executive. Nahe is sitting on the Ministerial benches, but not with other native representatives, which necessitates another interpreter. In reply to Col. Brett, Col. Whitmore stated that Sir Win. Jervoise would be here about the third week in December, and would commence his examination of the defence of the colony in the South, after having first visited Tasmania.
The Education Bill was re-committed for the purpose of making certain alterations in it. The money clause, the eighth, was ordered to be struck out, after a division, by a majority of two votes. Nelson, November 19. A fatal accident occurred yesterday afternoon to Mr Magent, Bank resident at Waimea, who, when driving home, stooped forward to whip the horse r and lost his balance. He fell from the box, alighting on his head, and ruptured a blood vessel in the brain. He was driven home, and died two hours after. Bluff, November 19.
The steamer Gazelle has returned from the Auckland Islands. She. did not recover the gold from the wreck of the General Grant, and has abandoned the search.
