The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2.
A FKAKFiTT* waste of valuable time, and public money is gtoing on in the Assembly nt present. Night after night the debate on the "No Confidence" motion is dragging its weary length along, whilst the real business of the country is being left unattended to. IWs a struggle for place and power, nothing 1 more nor less. Whichever -way the division eventuates, is of little importance', as this debate has shewn that parties art so evenly balanc3«i, that neither has such a majority as to be able to cany on the GoveriM»f»i effectively ', fi dis-
solution, therefore, seems io be inevitable. We consider that Major Atkinson made a fatal mistake iv kinging
forward tliis motion previous to the
Treasurer making his Financial Statement. By the course he has adopted, he has weakened his own position ninl strengthened that of the Ministry. He lias committed a great political blunder, which the first Napoleon designated as being worse than a crime. Major Atkinson when in power failed lo lead the Hoiase, and we doubt -whether, if he and his friends- were restored to office, matters would be much meixled. On the other hand, we have no great confidence in Sir George Grey. He is a pledged sepnratio'nis* going in for federal union with a separate government for each island. Tliis simply means Auckland ; dominant in the North Island ami Otago in the fco?»th Island, with a weak federal government at Wellington. Such a state of affairs is most nnde-
1 sirable, and as it seems that a dissolution must co?sie, the sooner an appeal !is made to the people the better, so that ! their verdict may be taken as to who ! shall rule.
