At the Addington Saleyards on Wednesday, 4613 sheep and 397 head of cattle came forward. Two-thirds of the sheep
■ comprised from good to extra prime quality fat mutton, for which descriptions <-the -biddings were languid, and prices -ranged from Is to Is 6d per head lower <; (forjgobd quality) than at last week's sale. 3For prime quality cross-breds (heavy -weights) 21s was obtained ; good do from 16s to 17a 6d ; fair quality lines brought from lis Gd to 15s. Prime quality fat nmeiinos realised 13s Gd ; good do from 10s
,• to Us. We quote 2|d per lb as an -average for fat mutton. Several small rvpeus of fat lambs came forward ; best lots > 'brought from lis Gd to 12s each, others : from 6s 6d to 10s each.
The cattle penned consisted of a fair proportion of fat stock, together with some very good lines of young stores. Best fat steers sold at from £11 5s to £12 15s per head ; lighter weights from £9 15s to £10 .ss! We quote 32s 6d per 1001b as an average for fat beef. Some nice-conditioned lots of mixed two year-olds sold at from £6 2s to £6 12s 6d each.
Messrs H. Matson and Co. report on the Canterbury live stock market for the week ending Friday, October 4, 1877, as follows: At the Papanui Monthly Sale, held on Tuesday last, 270 cattle and 2317 sheep were entered. In Sheep, we sold 82 crossbreds, at 19s 9d ; 567 cross-breds, at 13s 8d ; 261 merino wethers, at 9s 3d ; 233 cross-breds, at 13s 9d ; 270 mixed crossbreds, at 9s ; and sundry lines at market values. In Cattle, we cleared the bulk of our entries at prices fully up to market values, At the Canterbury Saleyards on Wednesday last, 400 head of cattle, 4813Jshoep, and 56 pigs, comprised the entry for the day. Our entries were 2GO head of cattle 187:-! sheep, 50 fat lambs, and 50 pigs. Li sheep our top prices were, 50 Southdowns, £1 Is per head ; 40 cross-breds, at £1 Is, and 20 at 17s 6d ; 166 cross-breds, 2 tooth, at 18s; 311 at 13s, 14s to 14a Gd, and 15s 9d ; 141 crossbreds at lis ; 326' merino wethers at 9s 9d to 10s, and sundry lines of hoggetts and mixed sheep at various values. We sold fat lambs at 4s, 6s, to Bs, aud from 10s to 14s 6d per head. Pigs brought from 4s to 10s to 25s per head. Iv Cattle our principal sales were 27 head of: fat. at £8 17s 6d, £11 10s, and £12 15s per head ; 9 at £9 15s, £10, £10 15s, and £11 10s : 5 at £8 5s ; 5 at £9 15 ; 5 at £9 ; 5 at £9 15s and £10 : 50 two-year-old steers at £6 2s; 22 at £4 18s to £5 10s ; 10 at £7 2s; 14 at £5 18s 6d ; 5 at £5 17s Gd ; 6 at £6 2s Gd; 13 at £5 Is; 10 at £4 ;8 at £6 12s 6d; 6 at £3 7s; 6 at £3 17s 6d ; 8 at £7 2s 6d. Country Sales. —At Leeston on Friday last. Our entry comprised 209 bead of cattle, 200 sheep, and 50 pigs, for various owners. Wool, Sheepskins, Hides, and Tallow.— At our weekly sale, held at the stores on Thurahry. We-catalogued 3240 sheepskins, 85 hides, 74 bags of rough fat, and a few fudges-and bags of wool. Best butchers' cross-breds sold from 6s 9d, 6s lid, 7s to 7s Id ; second, 5s 6d,_ss 9d, 6s to 6s 6d each ; ordinary to medium, 4s 9<l to os 3d ; best merinos, 6* to 6s 3d;,second, 5s 6d to 5s 9d ; fair, from 4s 6d to ss. Lambskins sold at 8d each ; salted hides, 4£d per lb : green, 3fd per lb : calf, 6£d per lb ; rough fat, 2|d per lb all round ; cask tallow "to 31s per cwt. At Tattkrsall's, on Saturday last, 124 horses were catalogued for the day's sale, including 24 entires, 17 ship horses, 20 unbroken stock, and the usual assortment of hacks, harness horses, &c, &c. There was a very large attendance, and we placed the following :—Entires—Ben Lomond, for 240gs ; Chevalier for 250gs ; Tasman for 205gs ; Lincolnshire Hero at 220gs ; Lord Lorn at 75 gs ; Nutmeg at3lgs ; the Larrikin, at 21gs; several of the imported geldings at prices varying from 45gs to 70gs each ; hacks and harness horses, from £22 to £33 ; unbroken stock. £18, £25 to £42 per head ; weeds, £7 10 to £12. The demand is good for all classes of sound, i a.aunch, guaranteed stock.
