MOUNT BOSSU ROAD.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AICAROA MAIL.
Sir, —I have read with considerable interest the letter oi: your correspondent " Aqua," wherein he refers to the proposed new road from the Wainui Pass along the range down to the foot of Luke Forsyth. Being myself employed in hewing out, as it were, a farm in the Okute Valley, I am •pretty well acquainted with the range along which the line of road is to go, and can bear testimony to the fact that there are no settlers on the line, nor ever likely to he ; and I feel no hesitation in asserting that, to make the proposed road along the range, would be simply to throw away the public money. That the Wainui settlers would prefer that the road should be made down the Oicute Valley I can easily believe, while the settlers in the Okute" Valley would be only too glad to receive such a boon. Our condition is deplorable, and we ought to be grateful to -'Aqua" for drawing attention to the matter. I, for one. trust that the proposed alteration will be carried out; and, if the Wainui people are agreeable, and wish the alteration to be made, have no doubt that the Government would agree to it, as the only interest they would have in the matter would be to be satisfied, that the suggested alteration would be best for all those concerned.
That a road could be made down this valley of a fair gradient, and with comparative ease, there is no doubt, whilst on the other hand a road along the range would be more difficult to make owing to the rocks and stones on the line. With the request for the usual space, I am, &c, , ALFRED JOBLIN. October Ist, 1877.
