THE CONVERSAZIONE.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —In listening to the remarks which, fell from the Bishop the other evening, I could scarcely reconcile the idea that the addition to churches and erection of a parsonage were signs of progress, when I considerthat the parish has been strained to its utmost to meet its liabilities, and is so terribly behind. A person would naturally think that the Bishop would consider the spiritual advancement of a parish far before its finances, but our clergy seem to think the opposite, and weigh our spirituality by our purse strings. I would like to say something on this head with respect to this parish, but it wuuld only open up a question that would do no good, and would undoubtedly push my letter out of your paper.

I will content myself by noticing a remark, made by the Rev. W. H. Cooper, to the effect "that he hoped a new line of conduct would hi carried out, and a fresh start made ;" and contrast this with what fell from the Rev. P. C. Anderson, "that if the parishioners remembered what the Rev. W. H. Cooper snid when he was introduced to this parish," he (Mr. Anderson) could fully indorse all of it ; also that he did not consider himself worthy to follow in the Rev, Mr. Cooper's footsteps, but would try to carry out what that gentienian had so well begun. For my own part I hope to see something better, and trust when the Rev. Mr. Anderson made that remark he was quite ignorant of anything that had taken place here. Yours, &c, PARISHIONER.
