INQUEST.
* An inquest was held at the house of Mr George Bennett,., Ranpo Bay, on Friday, the 14th inst., before J. Aylmer, Esq.. coroner, and a jury, of which Mr J. B. Barker was foreman, upon the body of Rose Receson Bennett, who had died there on the 12th inst.
George Bennett, sworn :—rDeceased, his wife, was taken unwell on the evening of Tuesday, the 11th inst. Went for a Mrs Green to attend on deceased. Deceased was confined on Wednesday morning. Shortly after confinement Mrs Rix came to my house. About 5 o'clock on Wednesmay morning 1 was told, by either Mrs Rix or Mrs Green, that there was danger, and that I had better send for a doctor; A horse was caught.' I was then told deceased was butter. Mrs Green attended my wife as a friend. The doctor was sent for about 9 o'clock on the morning of the 12th instant. , Mrs Lavinia Bennett, and Mrs Emma Rix, gave evidence as to deceased having been well attended to by Mrs Green, who had sole charge of her until the arrival of Dr Guthrie, from Akaroa.. John Guthrie, sworn, said:—l am a duly qualified medical practitioner. Tsaw
deceased on the morning of the 12th inst. I found a child had been horn alive. The deceased was in a weak state. I found deceased had been lacerated. I remained in the house all day. and left at not expecting her to live. I have made a pant mortem and fi'id no external marks of violence. The body seemed healthy. There was very little-blood in the main vessels. I am» of opinion that death was caused from loss of Wood the result of laceration.
After a short consideration, the jury returned! a verdict, "That .Rose Receson Bennett died at Little Akaloa, on September 12, 1877, from loss of blood after confinement ;" adding thereto a rider exonerating Mrs Green from all blame. But recommending that in such cases of confinement it is necessary to have a medical man if possible.
