LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at the office in Kaituna on Monday the 3rd inst. Present —Messrs. Murray (chairman pro. tern.), Coop, Gebbie and Parkinpon.

CORRESPONDENCE,

From the Manager of the Union Bank, offering to allow interest at the rate of 6 per cent, upon a fixed deposit of the district funds for a term of six or twelve months. From the Secretary for Public Works, Wellington, in reference to special grants of monies for various lines of road in the Peninsula. From the Colonial Secretary, asking for cost of valuation of rateable properties in the district. From the Springs Road Board, drawing the attention of this' Board to the state of the road between Barnett's corner and lumber's bridge. From the Ellesmere Road Board in reply, stating that the Board do not consider themselves interested in letting out Lake Ellesmere, therefore declining to contribute towards the cost. A requisition signed by 4G residents in the Tai Tapu and neighbourhood was received, asking that the road from Barnett's corner to lumber's bridge be formed and shingled. From Thomas Leatham, asking for a bonus in addition to the sum of £120 paid to him for letting out Lake Ellesmere. With reference to the offer of the Bank, the Board concluded that it would be inadvisable to lock up the funds for any fixed time, as it is their intention to employ the money in public works as early as possible. Relative to the special grants alluded to in the Secretary of Public Works letter, the clerk was directed to write to Mr Fenton, C.E., asking for information ; also to write to the Secretary for Public Works, informing him that his letter is the first intimation that the Board has had of the proposed works, and asking for further information.

The necessary information required by the Colonial Secretary was forwarded to him on the 23rd of August.In considering T. Leatham's application for a bonus, the Board concluded that " they cannot recognise that he is entitled to any ; the sum he received for the work being £50 in excess of the lowest tender ; at the same time the Board give him credit for the energetic manner in which he has completed the work." The clerk reported upon the various works in progress; also that the Lake Forsyth had risen consideraly during the late gale, but not high enough to admit of being let out; that it is damaging the road to a considerable ejtent, but that there does not appear to be any prospect

of averting the expense of this periodical evil.

The Board resolved to advertise for tho formation of new n.ad across Big Bay on the margin of Lake Ell'\sniere ; also for the formation of road alluded to by the Tai Tapu requisitionists ; also that tenders be invited for quarrying and breaking from 3000 to 4000 yards of metal in various localities.
