AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION.

More interest was taken in this election, than has ever been previously shewn on occasions of the kind in Akaroa, and wo hail it as a good sign of the times that the inhabitants are beginning to shew an increased interest in public affairs. The result of the poll appears in our advertisement columns, Mr J. Waeckerle receiving the honor of being returned at the head of the poll, Mr Meech being second on tho list.

Mr Waeckerle, in returning thanks to the Burgesses, said he was proud of the position they had placed him in, at the head of the poll. This he thought was owing to his action during the past year, and they might depend that in the future he would do the same as he had done before. There should be no partiality in his actions, but each end of the town should receive justice.

Mr Mcccii thanked the electors for the place he filled on the list. He would conscientiously do his duty in the Council, and would endeavour so to act as not to forfeit their confidence.

Mr Annand thanked the Burgesses for returning him again to the Council. He thought that he had done his duty in the past, and that his re-election proved that the electors thought so also. He would do his best for tho Borough, and hoped his endeavours would be such as to give satisfaction.

Mr Billens thanked the electors for returning him, and trusted his actions would prove they had made no mistake in so doing.

Mr O'Reilly felt the honor that had been done him in his election. He would clo his best No party or faction would be sided with, but all would receive fair play, and he trusted to be able to give a good account of his stewardship when the time came.

Mr Wagstaff, in returning his thanks to the electors, said he took his re-election as an earnest that the)' were satisfied with his conduct in the past. Though he had moved in the matter of obstructions, he thought the thanks of the community were duo to him for so doing. It was most necessary that all obstructions should be done away with.

Mr Cullen thanked the Burgesses for the confidence they had shewn in him. He would do his best for their interests, and that of the Borough generally, without regard to friends or favor.

Mr Penlington in thanking the electors for his re-election, said it shewed his services in the past were appreciated. He would do his duty with impartiality.

Mr Annand thanked the electors on behalf of Mr Harlock, for the votes that had been recorded for him. Although he had not been returned,he was grateful for their support.

Mr Waeckerle proposed a vote of of thanks to the returning officer, which having being seconed by Mr Daly and suitably responded toby that official, the proceedings terminated.
