AKAROA COUNTY EXTINGUISHMENT.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —Referring to the- remarks in your leading article of the 4th inst., on the proposal to do away with the Akaroa County, will you dome the favour to publish the enclosed letter from 15-lr MontM.H.R. Should it he.i-.till thought advisable, I shall be happy to convene a public meeting to take such further steps as maybe deemed necessary.—Yours, ftc, E. C. LATTER, - Barry's Bay. '. sth September, 1877. ' . .-

. '.' Christclmrcb, 13th July, 1877. *' Dear iSir,—l am in receipt of your letter of the 9th inst., enclosing the.resolution passed at a meeting of the members of your Council, strongly objecting to the resolution adopted by the meeting held in Christchurch on the 22nd June, which affirmed the desirableness of there being onl} - one County extending from the Hiirunui to the Rangitata. Yon request me to urge on the Government and the Assembly the great injustice which would be done to the Akaroa County were the proposed change fq b,e carried into effect.

"In reply, I. have to state that I am convinced no form of Government can be beneficial to a people to which they are strongly and with good reason opposed ; and that I. will feel it my duty to do all in my power to prevent the proposed change becoming law ; being assured from the decided, opinion expressed in the resolution of your Council, and from the opinions with which I 'have'been made acquainted of various residents in the district, that the feeling Of' the ratejjayers is opposed to the absorption of the Akaroa County into an extensive district, the people of which know nothing of : your locality arid its requirements.

" Believe me,

" Faithfully yours,

" W. MONTGOMERY,

v E. C. Latter, Esq., ' Chairman'of the " Akaroa Count}' Council."
