The third series, of wool sales commenced in London on August 14, with a large attendance and brisk competition : and subsequent telegrams confirm the Avelcome news. At tbe saleyards on Wednesday, 5108 sheep were yarded, a large number of them being cross-breds of prime quality. For very prime merinos 12s 6d was made ; lighter weights selling at 9s to 9s 6d. Our quotation for the week is 2£d per lb. The number of cattle brought forward was 442. Best beef made 35s per lOOlbs ; but our quotation for the week on the average is 32s 6d, Yearlings made up to £41256 d ; two.year-olds, about £6 15s; and three-year-olds, £7 5s to £8 sa, according to quality.

Messrs H. Matson and Co. report on tbe Canterbury live stock market, &c, for the week ending Thursday August 30, 1877. — At the Papanui Yards, on Tuesday last, 202 head of cattle, 3000 sheep, and 14 pigs comprised the entry for the day's sale. There was a large attendance of buyers and biddings throughout were animated. The quality of the stock offered, especially tbe cattle, was very superior, and a line of 20 oxen grazed on turnips commanded great attention, as also did the Motanau and Teviotdale heifers. The best lines were taicen as follows : —l6 bullocks at £17 per head ; 4 do at £15 5s ; and heifers at £9 10s, £10, and £1012s Gd. Other lines ranged from £12, £14, to £14 10s. In siieep we sold 720 cross-breds 2-toothsat lis ; 536 shorn lambs at lis 3d; 88 do at 10s 9d ; 100 hoggetts at 9s 9d ; 180 crosa-breds at lis; 170 do at 6s 9d to 12s. At the Canterbury Saleyards on Wednesday, 442 head of cattle, 5108 sheep. and 40 pigs came forward. The market was'over-orowded with second-class beef, and the trade,' having ample supplies on hand, would not operate,causing many lines to be turned out unsold. We do not quote any permanent reduction in values, as we look upon the day's sale as no criterion to go by. Our entries for tbe day comprised 255 head of cattle 2443 sheep, and 49 pigs In cattle, the highest price obtained during the day was, for a single bullock, at £15! cows and heifers ranging from'£Blos, £10 to-£l2 ;■ storeSAis usual sold at extreme prices, the younger stock causing considerable competition, In sheep, pur top sales were at 17s ; and for merinos 12s 6d; 15s 5d to 10s, &c; 218 cross-breds 15s 15s 3d, to 16s, and 281 merinos at 10s Gd to 12s Gd per head ; 196 cross-breds at 13s 9d, 15s 6d, 17s per head ; 700 cross-breds wethers at lis 6d, 400 cross-breds at 13s; 196 at 13s 9d to 17s 183 merino wethers at 7s 9d ; 60 hoggetts at 8s Wool Sheepskins, Hides, and Tallow. —At onr weekly sale on Thursday last, 3384 sheepskins, 110 hides, 80 bags of rough fat, several casks and kegs of tallow, and 5 bales of wool were offered. There was fair competition for all lots offered, but prices obtained were even more irregular than at last week's sale. Best butcher's crossbreds, 7s, 7s 3d, to 7s 6d ; second, Gs, 6s4d, 6s Gd to Gs lOd; medium, 5s to 5s 7d ; inferior, 4s to 4s 6d. Merinos, best, 5s to 5s 3d, to 5s 9d each : second, 4s to 4s 6d ; ordinary, 3s Gd each. Country skins sold very well at up to 5s 6d and Gs and from 3s 6d to 4s 6d according to quality. Hides salted, 4|d ; green, 3id ; calf, 6d per lb. Rough fat, 2|d per lb, the whole being inferior. Cask tallow, £23 8s 6d to £29 10s per ton. Wool. —The few bales of station strangers realised Bfd per lb. Tattersall's. —Ninety horses were catalogued on Saturday, and we disposed of a large proportion at about late values, the demand has slackened considerable for inferior draught stock: whilst for rcallygood descriptions a large demand exists.
