The Akaroa Mail. TUESDAY, AUGUST 28.

We are glad to see that the members of the committee of the Bank's. Peninsula Pastoral Association are beginning thus early to bestir themselves ) it augurs well for the success of the, forthcoming annual exhibition of stock and dairy produce. We trUst that no effort will be spared in order to publish a goodly priie list, as one means of attracting first-class animals to tile show, and we, \vould suggest that some of the prizes should take the for'in of books or medals rather than money. w Many persons would much rather receive as a prize something that they could keep as a memento oi their success, than money, which somehow or other soon vanishes away. Whilst we are upon this subject, we cannot refrain from expressing our regret that the president of the association, Mr Buchanan, has been compelled through failing health to tender his resignation.: It was a graceful act on the part of the committee to refuse to receive it, and request that gentleman to reconsider his decision. We sincerely trust that he will do so, for whilst the Banks' > Peninsula Pastoral Association exists, the name of Hugh Buchanan should never be dissevered from it. Is there a Horticultural Society in Akaroa ? If there is, we hope that some means v/ill be adopted to resuscitate it arid make it, evince some signs of active life. If horticulture were more practised . amongst us the luxuriant growth of docks and weeds which surround many of our dwellings would disappear, ami give place to well kept gardens neat mfi shrubs and bright with flowers. " : Instead of the thorn, would ( i come up the fig tree, instead oi the " briar, the myrtle tree." . Such a happy consummation is most devoutly to be wished. . :
