TENDERS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAHOA MAIL. Sir, —I was very much surprised to read a letter in your Friday's issue signed " Everell and Gunning," in which they state that the Okain's Boad Board invited tenders for shingling a mile and a-half on the road in the Littln Akaloa flat. Now, Sir, it is very clear that these sapients know very little of what they say, because, in the first place, there was only one mile to shingle, instead of one and a-half, and Mr. Pawson's tender was 3s. 6d. per yard and £23 for re-forming the 80 chains, and not ss. per yard for shingling, as stated by Everell and Gunning. Again, they state the tenders were given in the usual way. I should like to ask, Sir, if is usual to send tenders four and six days after the advertised date of receiving them, which was the case with all the tenders except Pawson's. If Everell and Gunning and White had seen the specification, they would have seen that they should have tendered for to re-crown the road Also, but they did not do so. 1 think, Sir, the Board has nothing to •explain why this contract has been let at Is. 7d. in advance of the lowest tender. Again, they state that I said at the Conference meeting held in Clmstchurch, that my Board wanted nothing to do with the -Pteifl-Sr-i-'dM not say so. I said tlie Peninsula did not want anything to do with the Plains. This was not only my own wish, but the wish of the members of the Akaroa County Council at our last meet- * ing. In conclusion, I may state that when ■a person writes letters to a newspaper, he should state the truth and not falsehoods, and not give personal slurs like those of j,,lvlessrs. Everell and Gunning. By inserting the above, you will oblige, Yours faithfully, JOHN B. BARKER. Little Akaloa, August 20, 1877.
