ODORIFEROUS DRAINS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —I have a dim recollection concerning the appointment by the Borough * Council, of an Inspector of Nuisances. Not being aware of the form of qualification required by this functionary, I am forced to use a theory of my own with regard to the matter which is, that an individual to be qualified for so high a billet, should be

possessed of the sharpest of eyesight, the mostlacute observation, and a snper-sus- r ceptible nasal organ. In fact his olfactory I nerves should be superhumanly sensitive. The " testing " of applicants for this ap- ' pointjtnent must be rather an" amusing spectVilei-but when the next competitive examination takes place among candidates for this office, and the subject of trial is the " power iof smell " as displayed by each— allow me to suggest that the squad be marched down to Mr. Latter's old store, and formed in order around the drain that empties itself there on to the Beach, just where the jetty juts outfrom the mainland. Professor Chadwick would do a good business in ■' Eau de Cologne" shortly afterwards, I reckon.—The odour that arises from that drain would capsize any number of Mayors, backed up by their respective Councils. Surely, Mr. Editor, the present Inspector of Nuisances has no power of smell, or this would not have been suffered so long to taint "the locality of the wharf. Perhaps, by kindly inserting this, you will be the means of drawing attention to the nuisance.—Yours, &c, PAT.CHOULI.
