The Committee have _ instructed Mr Fenton to report on this street., Cr Wagstaff moved—"That the Work's report be adopted." ..-,.'■ • Seconded by Cr Waeckerle. Cr Cullen desired to brine: before the, Council the state of the road in Jolliestreet, especially at the Mail office corner. It seemed that the Work's Committee had ignored t]us.m_tiWti_i(_^i4^ ! i^rf«dj T tiw> evident how much it needed attending to. As for waiting till the inhabitants at that part wrote about it, and agreed to pay <* their share, this had not been done in other cases, such as Church-street, Bruce's terrace for instance, and he could'not see why the Council should not also do Jolliestreet in the same way. He begged to * move that the footpath be made by the Mail office, to Farr's bridge,, and the top of Joliie-street.

Cr Annand said this matter had been ] mooted before, and the timber ordered. ] Cr Cullen thought, as regarded a petition, j that it was not generally understood that I a petition had to bo sent in. In the matter j of Joliie-street, it was a case that required immediate remedy. Cr Watkins'seconded the proposition, which was carried. STREET LAMPS. The Clerk said two offers had been obtained for constructing the street lamps, one from Mr Higgins, offering to do the iron work, and woodwork, for 455, or the woodwork alone, for 10s each. Another from E. Leprou, offering to do tbw ironwork alone for 255, but declining to have anything to do with the woodwork. Cr Annand moved, and Cr Cullen seconded, that Higgins' offer for woodwork be accepted, and Leprous for ironwork. The motion was carried. Re the footpaths from Mr Roberts' to Waeekerle's Hotel, Cr.Cnllen said the levels were all wroner. In the way Mr Fenton had them Mr Roberts'; gate would be.half coveted up.: The line, too, was wrong. Both had to be altered to the others. Cr Waeckerle, with regard to the line, objected to the direction Mr. Fenton had taken. When laying it out hejiad taken the bearing, and in doing so, had got out. There was a difference in width of 1 foot opposite his place less than the other side. Had told" Mr Fenton it would not do. Both the contractor and Mr Roberts had complained of the level. Cr Wagstaff moved—" That the Council declare their satisfaction at the action of the Works Committee." Cr Cullen seconded the motion. PAYMENTS. James Elliot .... ... 1 3 0 J. Drinkwater 2 15 0 J. Curtis 2 15 0 J. Manders 2 15 0 J. O'Brien 2 16 3 On an account of Sigleyand Dixon's for £70, payment was deferred until production.of a certificate from the Inspector. The" Chairman said, that in the case, of Mr Daly, whpse fence encroached on the roadway some 18iu % he thought the Council should, give notice for removal .now, so as to facilitate tbetransplanting of any trees Mr Daly might have to move. . •' Cr ;Cullen . moved— That the Clerk write to all those parties whose fences encroach on the roadway, giving them notice to Temove the same. Cr Annand considered the motion top vague. Some distance should be specified. It would be very hard to make a person move his fence for one inch. The Chairman said it was a question whether the Council allow any encroachment at all. Or Waeckerle moved—" That the matter be brought forward at the next meeting." He declared to table a notice of motion to that effect."

Cr " Wagstaff seconded the original motion. - , Cr Annand - moved, as an amendment— " That the Work's Committee be requested to find out bow many fences and buildings Mirroflch on L"vaud-street, and how far, and t<> report next meating." Cr Watkins said— understood it —Cr Cullen was asking that alb those persons be written to, whose fences in' any way encroached on the roadway, wirh a view to the removal of same, and that Cr Annand merely required information for the Council as to the encroachments on- Levnud-street, and that only the persons in that locality be written to, instead of setting the whole town by the ears. If this was the case, lie begged to second the amendment. The original -motion was carried. . Crs Watkins, Annand, Waeckerle voting for the amendment; and Crs Cullen, Wagataff, and Penlington for the original motion. The Chairman giving his casting, vote in its favour.
